Sometime soon…

Peter Jackson via Fasebook

Thank you all for your responses to my posting about Lorri and Damien’s book. Of course, many of you asked about the Hobbit Trailer. So, yes - there will be a Hobbit Trailer. But like the previous two years, it’s not going to be released until around Oct. The complex VFX work required to produce the battle shots we’re all wanting to see are simply not far enough along yet.

However … yesterday I finished work on a Teaser Trailer and that has just been delivered to Warner Bros. So no doubt this Teaser Trailer will be making it’s way into the world sometime soon…

"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies"

Inside Information...
Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".
When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.
And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.
As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.
Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.
And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.
It’ll be a fun year!

Cumberbatch had the 'scary' stuff for 'Hobbit's Smaug

'Hobbit' director Peter Jackson says he needed someone with a 'great, sharp mind' for his evil dragon.

Sure, Benedict Cumberbatch is the Internet's man of the moment. But for director Peter Jackson, the actor is pure dragon.

"Smaug has to be more than just a voice," said Jackson at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's premiere at the Dolby Theater on Monday night, where Cumberbatch arrived on the red carpet with co-stars Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage, Stephen Fry, Evangeline Lilly and Luke Evans.

The sequel's villain, voiced by Cumberbatch, was crucial to get right. "You want an actor who can bring a lot of intelligence, a lot of character to it. It's important with the dragon that he's smarter than Bilbo. I'm not saying Benedict is smarter than Martin, of course," Jackson grinned, catching himself.

"But you wanted a sense that Bilbo was up against a very formidable foe," he continued. "With Gollum last year you got a feeling that after a couple of minutes (Bilbo) had Gollum's measure figured out. With Smaug we wanted to keep it much more unpredictable. So literally, we wanted somebody scary. He's like the Hannibal Lecter of the dragon world. And Benedict has just got such a great voice and he's got such a great, sharp mind that we was able to contribute a huge amount to the role."

How did Cumberbatch get into the dragon's mind-set? "He stripped off and rolled around on a sheepskin rug. I'm not exaggerating!" said Jackson.

Meanwhile, Bloom reprises his role of Legolas — and somehow manages to look even younger in The Hobbit sequel than he did in Lord of the Rings. "That's fantastic!" Bloom grinned, surprised. "That's the magic of digital photography, right? I was very happy that the wig still fit and that I got a chance to be in these movies. He's a great character."

Bloom's secret to everlasting youth? "Well, I work out, I drink juices — that's a joke," he clarified.

Next for Jackson, after The Hobbit's third (and final) installment? A war film, "possibly," he said. "I'm thinking about doing a First World War film. I definitely want to make New Zealand movies for awhile. I haven't made a New Zealand story since Heavenly Creatures, which was about 20 years ago. So it's time to tell a couple of stories from my own country now."
