Gonna party like it's 2006

I don't think I have posted in over a year but in an attempt to get back into using the internet for more than Spotify/Flickr/Tumblr, I've decided to give LJ another go. Let's see how long it lasts this time. It will also be a good way to get used to typing on my iPad so please forgive any typos to begin with.

I'm not sure if I've even updated since I lost my job in July 2009!! Since then I've spent 3 weeks working in a PC World call centre but decided I could neither deal with the technical aspect of it or the customers so I quit to work as a temp for NTU for about 4-6 weeks with the possibility of being slightly long term. I've been there for almost 18 months now, the first year as temp and now as a permanent member of staff. I think leaving PC World was the biggest risk I've ever taken but it was definitely worth it.

I've since moved in with Jaqui about 15 months ago and, at the time of writing at least, we've managed to not kill each other.

I think I'll end the update there and mention that I'm hoping to start a music podcast which I'm sure you'll all look forward to hearing. I've got a dodgy accent and questionable music taste, how can you resist!?

1. Stiff Little Fingers

SLF are a punk band from Belfast. They begain the 70s and, much to my disgust, still continue in some form today. Much like The Jam, they symbolised youth, boredom and anger..everything a punk band should stand for in my opinion. This is why it depresses me to see 50 year old men on stage trying to conjur up the venom they had as 17 year olds living in what was essentially a war torn country. I'm sorry Jake Burns but as much as I love the song Barbed Wire Love, you can no longer tell me about meeting your girlfriend in the wastelands with the fear of being attacked, you live in Chicago with your wife!

Despite all this moaning, SLF's first album - Inflammable Material, is easily one of my favourite records ever. It is fast, raw, sometimes painful to listen to and most of all, it captures exactly what it would have been like for them at that time. It was the first album released on Rough Trade and I honestly think it's the best. 13 songs which usually don't even trouble the 3 minute mark, of pure aggression and anger - very few things beat Jake Burns screaming 'Why did you lie to us!?' about their treatment by Rough Trade. I honestly have difficulty writing about this record because it means so much, I don't think I can do it justice - just listen to it!!!

Subsequent records had some great moments, although usually missing the edge of the debut - check out Nobodys Heroes.

I'm just glad the Deep Purple influence went no further than the band name. Punk might be dead, this record is still amazing.

2. Being a freaky eater

I am not a freaky eater!!! I admit I was maybe a bit slow off the starting blocks with regards to trying certain foods but I DO try new food :P I may not like every type of food that's 'thrown' at me but I do try them, just because I like my garlic bread to have some bread and not just garlic, does not make me a freaky eater!

I do have a few food practices that some may call strange, I disagree. Not liking too much butter is not strange. Half filling a cup of tea with cold water is not strange!!

Anyone who mixes potato, egg, garlic and onion is strange

p.s I admit asking if they sell chips in Wagamama was an error!

3. Fixed gear

I really don't know where my obsession for fixed gear bikes came from but they have planted themselves firmly in my brain and are refusing to budge! Everytime I think I have got over the latest fixed gear obsession, I see one chained up against a lampost, or I see a rider struggling up Mansfield road, and the addicition begins again

Personally, I think I'd be better off with single speed over fixed gear, although the aim is to build up to riding fixed gear and hurtling down Derby Road in the wrong direction with no brakes. I think once the weather picks up I will make a trip to the second hand bike shop on Lenton Bouv-a-lard and see what I can haggle! Infact, the weather has pciked up today..and I'm going to Lenton tomorrow..and I have some extra money...mmmm..

4. Belfast

Is where I come from! I've been planning my escape from Belfast since I was about 12, I didn't realise it would actually happen so quickly though. Belfast is a good place to live for a while if you're the type of person who likes to know everyone around you. It's hard to go anywhere in Belfast without meeting people you know, which is both a curse and a blessing. Obviously due to 'The Troubles' we are a bit behind the rest of the UK, it is only recently that smaller bands have started to make the trip over. I have to say though, Belfast is creating quite a healthy 'arts scene' for lack of a better term. Ever since moving, there seems to be something happening every weekend that I'd like to go to in Belfast. I'm glad I left though as it has opened up a lot more opportunities for me. I'm sure the same events exist in Nottingham, I'm just yet to find them or the people involved but give it time.

5. Favourite place in Nottingham

I've only been in Nottingham about 5 months so I haven't had a chance to fully explore it's nooks and crannies. I have discovered a few places which I like so far.
  • Hand and Heart - a great pub on Derby Road with a good atmosphere and lovely staff ; )
  • Lee Rosys - obvious choice but I think it's a great place to relax for a while, if you can get a seat. There seems to be a lot happening every evening which is good!
  • The Park/Old Trip - I really enjoy taking a walk around The Park on a nice day and finishing it up with a coke and crossword in the Old Trip To Jerusalem
Nottingham is a beautiful place with a lot of nice things to see, I can't wait until the weather gets better so I can see them. I want to go on a walk along the waterfront!
