  1. bookcrossing:
    n. the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.
(added to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in August 2004)

This "virtue" is made of two of my vices - 1) buying thrift store books for entertainment, and 2) going on and on about obscure ideas that I think should be less obscure. Leaving interesting books in random places increases the chance that a random stranger and I may have something in common.

  2. creation spirituality:
This is the closest single label I can give to describe my religion.
"The universe, the solar system, and planet earth in themselves and in their evolutionary emergence constitute for the human community the primary revelation of that ultimate mystery whence all things emerge into being."- Thomas Berry

CS is an embodied sprituality that celebrates the divine beauty and creativity of what is, highlighting the spiritual journey through Four Paths articulated by Matthew Fox from the though of Meister Eckhart.

    Some relevant Eckhart quotes:
"Every human person is an aristocrat. Every human person is noble and of royal blood, born from the intimate depths of the divine nature and the divine wilderness."

"What is the test then that you have indeed undergone this holy birth? Listen carefully. If the birth has truly taken place within you, then every single creature points you toward God."

"Divinity is a great underground river that no one can dam up and no one can stop."- Meister Eckhart

With it's holy trinity of science, art and mysticism, Creation Spirituality finds kinship in Deep Ecology, Ecofeminism, liberation theology, and Teilhard de Chardin and "the New Story".

Like Teilhard, I find that "less and less do I see any difference between research and adoration", and I agree Eckhart that "the best name for God is compassion".

  3. dogen:
Dogen was a poet, a philosopher and the founder of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. Although I disagree with his soteriological theories (clearly because I am not enlightened), his language play is amazing - twisting figures of speech into objects, knocking traditional concepts into non-traditional contexts, jumping from the solidity of an individual moment to the free-floating empty oneness of being.

  4. existentialism:

  5. My susceptibility to existentialism grew out of my angsty youth and the schizoid absurdity I found myself in (also known as the "evangelical intellectual's double-life of faith")

  6. hermeneutics:

  7. libertarian socialism:
Sadly, to many, this probably seems like an oxymoron, though to me, it's a redundancy.

  8. overcast days:
"The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain"
    - Jim Morrison, Crystal Ship
First of all, I don't tolerate heat well, so sunny days are typically fraught with discomfort. Aside from that, the yellow sun bleaches the color from things, especially reds and blues. Also, the shadowy, sculpted texture of churning clouds beats "clear skies" any day.

  9. quarter-sawn white oak:
The basic material of most Arts & Crafts furniture. Why 'quarter-sawn white oak' specifically? Quarter-sawn wood is stronger, less apt to bow, and in some wood grains like oak, quarter-sawing reveals an unusual medullary "ray-fleck" pattern.

    More unfinished fleck.

Also, the tannins in oaks age well to darken the woodgrain - these tannins react well to fuming, a technique which develops this patina prematurely.
Fumed patina compared with unfinished oak.

  10. smell of old books:
Self-explanatory. Smells evoke emotions and memory readily - I like both the sense of knowledge and age that the smell of old books trigger in me. That being said, some books age better than others.

  11. trees:
All trees. When I was young, I used to talk to trees.

More Ted Rall sharing

One complaint I have with Ted Rall: when he's inspired and on a roll, he constantly updates the new comics. When he is dull and uninspired, he leaves the same uninspired comic up for days. He doesn't leave a chance to pimp his good stuff before it changes.

Never fear, oh noble f-list - if it's really good, I download the comic for posterity.

On with the show...

And me pimping a community devoted to pictures of trees:

Meme again

I did a version of this in the past, but since it seems the thing to do these days (and my friends-list and interest-list are larger), here it goes again:
1. Scan my interest list and pick out the one that seems the most odd to you.

2. I’ll explain it.

3. Then you post this in your journal so other people can ask you about your interests.
