Tutorial 002 - Colouring

Made for PS CS. Translatable, probably. Basic knowledge of your program required. Not meant to be duplicated - this is MY OWN picture of people in MY life - but to be followed as hints.

D'you wanna go from to ?

Step 1
First, pick a picture very similar to the one I'm using. IE, it's got low contrast and isn't very saturated with colour, but it has a pale red-and-yellow caste to it.
Crop and resize your picture to 100x100. Wow, how un-special is that? Congratulations, you've got a base you want to make an icon out of! Do whatever sharpening trick you've patented that works for your program; I've noticed that each version of Photoshop and PSP seems to have a different degree of sharpening per click of the 'sharpen' tool. It's odd. But I digress...

Step 2
Duplicate the background layer and set it to Overlay.

Ignore the ugliness. Please.

Step 3
Create a new layer just underneath your overlay layer and fill it with a dark purple, such as #2E2534. Set it to exclusion.

Step 4
Now we get to the stuff that might start suprising you. Duplicate the exclusion layer and set it to Soft light. Yes, SOFT LIGHT.

Taa daa!

Other icons made like this include...

NONE OF THE ICONS IN THIS TUTORIAL ARE AVAILABLE FOR SNAGGAGE. THEY ARE PICTURES OF THE PEOPLE IN MY LIFE. USE NOT. THAT'S STALKING, AND STALKING IS GROSS.

I'd love to see what you guys come up with from this. In other news, have a good tomorrow, everybody!
