I'm kind of disappointed with Hickman's FF #8. I mean, it's not bad, but you'd think that a Doom-led collection of hypersmart villains would be more... creative in their approach (although Doom's rather amusing physicality was probably deliberate).

That said, and I have to ask you to excuse my descent into shallowness, Sue Storm getting pissed off hits all kind of hotness spots. I wonder if that might explain part of Reed's general missing-the-point-ness – his hindbrain keeps getting rewarded every time he messes up.

Well, I'm pretty sure Doom's just indulging in the sheer glee of full license to smack versions of Reed around. (He gets all the great moments this issue, from "only kill two" to that glorious backhand.) But I do rather wonder if he's brought all the other villains along as part of some kind of sacrificial/deceptive gambit, and not necessarily with their consent or knowledge. It's not like he'd actually believe he needs their assistance, so I half suspect he's just setting them loose with a surface pretence of a plan and waiting for the results to play out. But I guess we'll see.

Hickman's Sue is awesome, and I love the way his Nathaniel interacts with both her and Reed; I really hope he's going to stick around for good after this storyline. My favourite little detail of the issue, though, is the fact that the roar Valeria lets out when she throws the plant pot is the exact same sound effect that Doom makes when he hefts those rocks four pages later. That just made me grin.

I agree, Doom's world consists of Doom, Richards, and pawns. And, yes, smacking Reed around must be the height of his day.

I'm torn between glee at the shared roar, and fear. I mean, Val was named by Doom, she seems to feel fairly relaxed around him... it's cute, and also worrying (for the world, certainly, and probably for Doom, too).

One wonders if Doom's royal protection and use of her as a familiar has a lingering psychological/magical component. She may feel safer/more relaxed around him because is literally made safer by his proximity, and she can sense it.

Angry Sue produces more heat than Johnny ever did.

Hickman's FF has been a mishmash of good ideas (many stolen from better stories) and poor execution in details.

Dr. Doom/Mad Thinker/High Evolutionary/Diablo ought to be insanely game changing allies, but someone forgot to tell them they're not generic thugs. They literally just wade in and punch people, which in the case of Mad Thinker is comically OOC.

Diablo isn't even using any alchemical powers other than "start fires offscreen", which is a total misuse of an awesome character. He should be fucking melting moloids with pellets that turn them into abominations, he's an immortal combat alchemist for god's sake.

You can imagine Doom slapping Richards for the fun of it, but he really only goes in for that once he's already established control. Other than throw some rocks, he's done almost nothing here. Richards2 could have anything from automated defenses to magical teleporting henchfolks. Unless Doom's shielding spell is literally making them invincible (in which case maybe he's just making fun of Wizard at this point?) or he did something else interesting offscreen, why would he be so confident? I guess the most obvious explanation is that it's part of his double bluff on Diablo and Mad Thinker, he's just acting like he's already in control so they'd hurry up and try to double-cross him already.

I'd like to think that everybody's thrice-crossing everybody, and that the punching people thing is just a diversion before all the hypersmart stuff hits at the same time, but I wouldn't bet on that.
