SPN 5x19: Turtles all the way down

From an episodic point of view, so to speak, I quite liked this episode, particularly when it didn't take itself, or the Winchesters, too seriously. Dean is particularly fun to watch when they are in Scooby-Doo mode. To be fair, neither of the brothers is a veritable mastermind (truth be told, the SPN-verse is light on masterminds; it's an universe of raw emotions rather than plans, of prophecies being expressed as brotherly relationships rather than arcane symbols), but confused!Sam tends to stammer and move very cautiously (often fifteen seconds after he somehow raised his foot high enough to put it inside his mouth), while confused!Dean tends to stammer and trainwreck -yes, that's a verb now- ahead.

Arcwise, though, it wasn't satisfactory. Not because the matter of the rest of the gods wasn't worth exploring (although I don't really think the SPN universe is well suited to multiple gods; it should have been one or, better yet, zero), but because Gabriel's last message-slash-plan came from him. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it'll be the whole story, and I don't begrudge the guys from grasping at whatever straw of half-hope they can find, not with the fate of the world hanging in there, but I don't want angels or God to solve the Apocalypse issue.

By the way, as much as I love Gabriel, I liked him better as the Trickster, and I don't quite buy his taking our side. Cass, as alien as he is, is more human, because he doesn't "like us because we try to be better," which is quite an inhuman motivation as far as I'm concerned. Cass does what he does because he's bitter, pissed off, and desperate, and that is 90% of what being human is about. Gabriel is flamboyant, and gives you tricky gifts, but Cass is SRS BSNS.

Oh, and by the way, the Winchester brothers? So never taking sides with "the people." They don't have much interest on, respect for, or interactions with civilians (hell, at this point, we all know how difficult it'd be for them to have civilian lives); they rescue them, and sacrifice for them, and so on, but that's it. They are closer to the world of what they fight than to the world they protect. Hell, do you remember future-Dean? He was bitter and angry, but the opposite of maladjusted — his world didn't end, everybody else got sucked into it.

Also by the way, if the show has turned to be about predestination and (Team) Free Will — about freedom from the prophecies of Gods and fathers, and from the chains we forge ourselves with our love and hate of them — then the boys will have to break free of John Winchester, and of his ways of doing things. The whole problem comes from Michael and Lucifer still being caught in the web of their love of and need for God, even when He's gone; kudos to Gabriel for finding a third way between blind obedience and blind rebellion. I see Dean and Sam as still very much on the path John put them on, being the Hunters he trained them to be.

Granted, they stakes are higher, and their motivations might be shifting. Hell, Dean allying with the gods? That was a John Sheridan moment in the making there. Ally with angels, work with monsters, migrate the whole human population to a godless alternate world, do anything, do the unthinkable. Kick both the Angels and the Shadows out of your galaxy. Make every Potential an Slayer. Do something your father, your mother, and centuries of their ancestors, could have never thought of.

Whenever the gods are playing chess, the only human move is to change the rules. Everything else is defeat.
