SPN 5x16

Couple of things:

* The final Castiel et al bits: pure blues. Three guys in a motel room with the Apocalypse on their shoulders and processing that God has told them to back off. You don't get more blues than that.

* Whatever you think about physical wincest, spiritual wincest is now kind of canon.

My expectations about the fallout from this ep. can be summarized in the immortal words of John Shaft: Do you think that makes me less dangerous, or more dangerous?

Kind of? KIND OF?
Dude, I told you, eric loves us, Misha rocks, and Dean threatening those hunters was the scariest I've ever seen him.

Funny thing is, as long as the endgame isn't resolved, they are now functionally immortal. They have most of the forces of Heaven and Hell invested in their survival (if not in their peace of mind).

The whole hour broke my heart. Every episode I think it can't possibly get worse for Dean (and Sam and Castiel) and then IT DOES.

But yeah, the thing that stuck with me is how they're functionally immortal. I've been thinking about it since they've been going back and forth through time, Sam spent months with Dean dead in Mystery Spot, Dean spent decades in Hell, and Castiel is outside of the influence of time. If the two brothers need to be kept alive for their purpose and they keep being reset to physical wholeness (though not emotional wholeness; emotional functionality, maybe, but even then it's a near thing) after every death (with no memory of the afterlife trip)... this never ends for them.

They've been fighting their whole lives and while they always used to think it would end sad or bloody, it's looking like it's never going to end at all. I am completely horrified by the prospect of them being infinite warriors, because no way can they remain human going at this kind of speed through this kind of gauntlet. By the same turn, I read a fic ages ago where the brothers Winchester sort of went the way of American Gods and became immortal, eternal Hunters. It was written before season 3, I'm pretty sure, and is thus quite happy in comparison to how that kind of thing could be viewed now.

Ugh, yeah. I don't know what kind of timetable the angels are in, but they seem to have enough time to do plenty of torturing, and eventually the kids will break.
