IMHO

Before Terminator: Salvation there was no depiction of an adult John Connor that justified his mythical, historical, and strategical importance in the Terminator universe. We were told, not shown, that he was literally a world-class badass.

The situation remains unchanged.

The crazy thing is that they had such a great base template. Sarah Conner, in T2, blew my teenaged mind. She is a super-soldier, she knows how to do everything, no prison can hold her, she has paramilitary contacts all over the world.

All John Conner had to do is be half as cool as her, stay alive, organize the resistance via a vast network of underground links he and mom built beforehand, and it would all be gravy. Heck, even T3, as terrible as it was, left us in a good place for it. John in a bunker, with nothing but radios and a lifetime of preparation and intel? Groovy.

Yeah. T3!John didn't seem suited to lead anything into defeating anything, but at least he got some good tools handed out to him.

In any case, I always thought Sarah showed much more potential to lead the resistance. As you said, she's just that good.

Toward the end of The Sarah Conner Chronicles, specifically when John figured out that it wasn't Cameron who killed Riley, he was getting very close, though. Sneaking around to look at Riley's corpse, figuring out the basic forensics of a hand-to-hand fight with a Terminator, and shadowing Derek...that was the first time it ever really clicked with me that John Conner was a Batman-like polymath (strategist, leader, detective, technician), which was why he alone posed a threat to SkyNet.

Then, yeah, the movie happened.

YMMV, of course. But it annoys me that I did buy Bale as a young Bruce, so it's not as if it was too much of a stretch.

I've yet to see it, I'm going with friends this saturday. But from what I've heard, it really doesn't measure up. I hope going in with low expectations will pay off.

Best of luck. There were some cool scenes, at least.

Reminded me of X3. Full of good bits that don't add up to a good movie.
