Seen all over my f-list

Dick "DJ" Grayson. Right.

a) Anticipating the pain of canon being shredded in twenty different ways just in the pilot. For starters, I don't think the series is going to be about a small kid - if they are going after the Smallville demographic, he's going to be at least a teen, already messing up the timeline.

b) Nine words: Dawson's Creek On A Circus. And There Is Crime.

c) (If the series gets popular) Dreading the back-influence of TV-canon into comics a couple of years down the road.

d) Quietly grateful that they didn't go for a pre-Batman Bruce show (but only because that's the show I've always dreamed about watching, and I know there's no way they'd do it right).

I had a brief moment of optimism when I first heard about it, then I was forcibly reminded a) hello, Smallville and b) it's the CW. ::wince::

It's going to make me cry, isn't it?

I'm going into it with zero expectations, so... I guess it'll only break my heart a little.
Oct. 1st, 2008 04:59 pm (UTC)
Um. I wasn't aware there was really that much you could do with a pre-Batman Dick.
Unless they go the Carnivale route and make it trippy.
Oct. 1st, 2008 05:09 pm (UTC)
That'd be actually quite cool, although there's no need to actually call the protagonist Dick Grayson to do that (except of course for the marketing side of it).
Oct. 1st, 2008 05:04 pm (UTC)
What fuckery is this?
Oct. 1st, 2008 05:09 pm (UTC)
No idea.
Oct. 1st, 2008 05:17 pm (UTC)
they could give him older siblings and make it Malcolm In the Middle.

Seriously though, at some point Dick has to become Robin, so almost everybody we're going to care about has to die. Unless it's a limited mini-series with a definite ending, that's just not good TV.
Oct. 1st, 2008 05:21 pm (UTC)
Yes; either they gloss over the fact that his parents are going to die, or change it(?), or give the show a lot of foreshadowing and encroaching drama, which I think would be wrong for the character and the backstory (although that's pretty much what they did with Clark in SmallVille, making young!Clark deal with things way before he did so in comic canon).

Yes, yes, yes, and also yes.

Guess from my icon which show *I* want. ;)

Well done, that'd be beyond awesome.

While I'm convinced that it will suck ass and not in any good way, still... With SPN and Smallville people behind it it might turn out to be the gayest piece of television in history. Adding some SPN dirtywrong to the mix.
Oct. 1st, 2008 06:33 pm (UTC)
That's true. I foresee a rival, another young acrobat boy with a bad attitude (possibly named Jason? because TV writers are insane like that) and lots of UTS between them as they pretend to fight for the love of bookish librarian Veronica Mars-like spunky teenage detective Barbara.

Probably at some point one of the circus "freaks" (hot, green-eyed, weirdly maned "Star") is going to be proved an alien princess hiding in the circus from out-of-planet bounty hunters that DJ will help her defeat. Maybe while wearing a domino mask.

Sorry, I'm supposed to be supportive. Right... There, there.
Is just that After SG90210 I've been feeling kinda numb towards this sort of thing.
On the one hand, yeah, the CW does Smallville. STILL.
Yet, the CW also has SPN. So maybe it could end up not sucking?
Do you have any idea who the writers/producers/directors will be? That's the key.
Oct. 2nd, 2008 01:08 pm (UTC)
If it means anything, McG is going to be producer, I think.

Maybe they'll give DJ a brother... :D
Oct. 1st, 2008 07:51 pm (UTC)
Okay, *and*, because I have been responding this every time with some different point every time it pops up on my flist, which it is with regularity: why DJ? I mean, presumably because they don't want to have to say 'Dick' every five minutes on cable TV, but why not 'RJ' if you're going to rename him?
Oct. 1st, 2008 08:28 pm (UTC)
Because "RJ" sounds like stodgy banker initials but "DJ" sounds like some hot dude you want to make out with? I'm just speculating, here.

do not want
(also. DJ? really?)
Oct. 2nd, 2008 02:44 am (UTC)
ha ha ha, I kind of love "DJ" now, I'm imagining him as an actual 90s DJ, like working on his own intro music to play when he swoops out of the shadows.

"It's riki-riki-riki-reeeek-ROBIN!"

Do not want!

I'm looking for a silver lining here, but all I'm finding is more raincloud. Um. Maybe it'll be a really, really gay show? Or a really, really canceled show? Either could work.
Oct. 2nd, 2008 01:12 pm (UTC)
Actually, it might be both *g*.
Oct. 3rd, 2008 03:39 am (UTC)
What the hell? You know, I should be happy about one of my boys being on screen. I should. But...this is all wrong. They're going to make a show out of a few random pages scattered across decades of comics, that could barely fill more than one book? I love little acrobat Dickie, but this isn't going to work. And The Graysons has gotta be the corniest possible name for it. You're right about them probably messing up Bruce, but dammit, if it was a show about Bruce's training there'd at least be a lot of ideas there. I have no clue how they're going to fill even a season of a show about pre-Robin Dick. And even if they managed it they're going to fall into the exact same trap as Smallville, where they've locked a character out of where we all Know he's going. Man, if they want geek teen drama, why not make a Titans show? Then you could at least have episodic missions, and not have to rely on invented characters.
This is a Bad Plan. :(
Oct. 3rd, 2008 03:21 pm (UTC)
*nods* Either it'll be a very short show (See the Graysons flight. See the Graysons fall. Fall, Graysons, fall.), or it'll be about wholly different people who just happen to be in circus acrobats named Grayson.
