Fic: Recruitment (PG13, DCU/Other)

Title: Recruitment
Rating: PG13
Fandom: DCU/Other
Author Notes: Written for penknife's TV Tropes Challenge. The trope is the Lost World. Feels more like a prologue than a finished fic; sorry about that, the muses were cryptic on this one.

The first step was getting into orbit. That was easy. The second step would be the difficult one.

I pointed all the sensors in my vehicle away from the planet, and then engaged maneuvers, looping the craft in an complex fractal path that was the tridimensional projection of a fifth-dimensional construct. If I had timed it right and the energy shields worked...

I scanned the Earth again. There was a city below me, a city that hadn't been there before.

I began my descent, gathering as much surface data as possible. The city was big, as expected, and the landmarks didn't seem to contradict the available intel. The bridges, the port, the huge towers in the middle of downtown... What I was seeking, though, was outside the city proper. Low-profile on the EM spectrum, but architecturally unique.

There it was. I landed close to the building, but avoiding the perimeter sensors it was sure to have. Direct infiltration was called for.

It was about to rain, and the building looked almost stately under the heavy clouds. Entering it was not a challenge beyond my training, but what -who- I sought wasn't likely to be in the above-ground levels.

I carefully headed downwards on stairs carved on stone. I felt like the whole city was condensed in the building, and the building in the stairs.

He was waiting for me. He couldn't possibly know that I was coming, but he was.

"You are not from here," he said.

"Where I come from, this city is not in the maps," I said, trying to explain. "But we know of you, and we need your help."

The green-haired man behind the bars laughed. It scared the hell out of me.

He would be perfect. I opened his door.
