Title: Alternatives
Fandom: Simon Spector
Prompt: #29, Repression
Rating: PG13
Warnings: Simon is never a good person, but sometimes he's even worse than he is.
Summary: Overconfidence is the weakness of the hypercompetent.
Word Count: A hundred and eighty.
Author Notes: Alright, so I do have an obsession with this sort of thing. What can I say? It's fun.

Overconfidence is the weakness of the hypercompetent. Simon has figured out a solution.

His name is Umbra. Little is known about his whereabouts, motivation, or training, beyond the facts of his extremely high intelligence, tactical virtuosity, and abundant data about Spector. His only traceable pattern of behavior is his obsession with creating plans to kill or otherwise nullify Spector.

Simon somehow hears of these plans with enough time to create countermeasures, and this constant strategic planning race keeps him head and shoulders above every other enemy plotting against him. None of them is as competent and dedicated as Umbra.

Simon Spector is a master of self-hypnosis. He is Umbra, his solution to his necessity to keep himself sharp by providing a suitably competent enemy.

Umbra is as intelligent as Simon Spector, intelligent enough to have figured out that he is a Potemkin personality for Spector's benefit, and skilled enough to have hidden this knowledge from his host.

His strategic situation -not being real- might be dismal, but this knowledge gives him a tactical window of opportunity.

He might still kill Spector.

Batman would like to call Simon Specter a giant freak...but he won't, because even he knows when not to prod the loonies

creating plans to kill or otherwise nullify Spector
And if any of those plans involved the death or injury of innocent parties, how would Simon react? This is one of his personalities, which he intentionally created. Would he kill himself? Excise Umbra? Attempt some type of reintegration? Or is Umbra somehow mentally hobbled when it comes to injuring anyone other than Specter?

Now that I think about it, that might actually be an effective way to neutralize Specter. Create a massive atrocity that has absolutely nothing to do with Specter then reveal the reality of who/what did it. Ruin his hero cred if nothing else.

Mmm, that's a good idea.

I think Simon has built Umbra so he can only reach the planning stage; he wants to know what enemies could plot against him, but doesn't particularly want those plans to be put into practice.

Of course, it's the classic problem that comes with creating an intelligence/raising somebody/etc: anybody smart enough to be interesting or useful is probably going to be too smart to be controlled with a hundred percent certainty.

I'm not as smart as Simon, but I have Google.
Bless you, bless you, you gorgeous man you.

Would Potemkin personality be a reference to Potemkin villages?

Yes! I'm not sure it's an accurate description of Umbra; it might be more precise to say that he's an actual Searlian Chinese Room, but that didn't sound so well in my head.

Aaannd, I'm back into Watt's territory. Dammit! The man is everywhere in my memescape.

Hmm.

It occurs to me I've never seen or heard you and Watts at the same time.

*eyes you with growing suspicion*

You mean, could I be one of the hundreds of lesser subpersonalities Watts simulates with his visual cortex during the intervals while he blinks?

That's entirely possible.

And it's even more likely than we both are.

Aaaaaaaagh.

Agh agh agh. The Bruce in my head is making odd faces behind his face. The Tim in my head is plotting.

The *Cass* in my head is *laughing*.

... And we are all so very happy, especially with Tim's response.

I've always thought Cass must have a beautiful laugh.

I know it's getting repetitious, but: Ack!

For a single-issue character, Simon has a lot of potential for the Utter Wrong. I love him.
