Title: The gulfs between the lights
Rating: PG13
Fandom: DCU
Summary: Honor is both about what we do and about what we don't.
Author Notes: Titans Tomorrow universe. Maybe. A gift for katarik.

"You are far away from home, Slade."

"So are you, kid."

"Don't call me that."

"Then stop acting like one. You've got responsibilities back home."

"You mean you want my help."

"I might help. Despite your running away, there's still some people on the fence. You might swing a few of them in our side."

"What makes you think I want your side to win?"

"The fact that you ran away from Earth."

"New Tamaran needed my help. Batman doesn't."

"He might be Batman these days, but he isn't your daddy. You don't owe him anything."

"Don't. Tell me about loyalty, Slade. Not you. Not ever. You lost the right to use that card a long time ago."

"Then that's it? You are going to stay over here with your fuckbuddy-slash-queen and watch Earth go to hell just because you have a grudge against me? Or is it because you know I will kill your psycho, fascist little brother?"

"I left because I didn't want to be there when he killed you. And because I knew I wouldn't stop him."

"Don't tell me he's better than you."

"I would have helped him. Good bye, Slade."

They have a history, and, most importantly, they are people who hurt and are hurt at a human level other characters aren't. They feel sometimes too much.

Running away from home is never the right answer, Dick.

He has a history of doing that, doesn't he?

It's only the right answer in toonverse. You'd think he'd learn.

*g* Thanks!

I. Ouch.

Such lovely, devastating voices. I love what you did with the universe.

There's so much hurt, and everything is utterly complicated and horrible. Dick obviously made the wrong choice here, but I can't really blame him.

I kind of want to smack them and hug them all in turns.

Beautiful fic.

Thanks so much!

I kind of want to smack them and hug them all in turns. It's a very frequent feeling with DC characters, isn't it? *g*

And again, I find myself feeling inappropriately gleeful.

They are so very, very fucked up. ♥

Then my work here is done for now. :D

He's not sure whether to believe the kid or not.

He's always had plans for what would happen if the Gotham crew ever stopped fucking around and decided to be serious, but he hadn't anticipated -- not really -- having to take Nightwing down.

He doesn't say, "Kid, I'm going to kill *him*," and he doesn't say, "I would've killed you if you'd been on his side."

He just turns and walks away and feels Grayson's eyes on his back.

*hearts* With you around, I wonder why the rest of us -DC writers included- even bother attempting to write Slade.

To give me things to play with!

Oh DICK. That's a fairly excellent explanation for what happened to him in that verse.

Although it's far less twisted (i.e. intriguing) than some of the other explanations I've seen around.

There and always, Dick is one of the drivers of the DCU. An universe without him... well, it might end just as fucked up as that one was.
