Ficlet: Counterfeit (JL, PG13, Prompt #3: Ends Justify the Means)

Title: Counterfeit
Fandom: DC Comics
Prompt: #3, Ends Justify the Means
Word Count: About two hundred and fifty.
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: DC Comics owns all characters involved.
Summary: Things rarely are what they seem.
Author Notes: Hrrm. A bit of a failed fic, I think.

Superman's shadow fell through the window wall, casting itself against the oak desk.

"How can I help you, Superman?"

"Tell me where Lois is."

"Isn't she at the Daily Planet?"

"I don't have time for your lies and manipulation. Tell me where she is or I will tear down your building."

"And endanger innocents?"

Superman tore apart the reinforced glasslike polymer with a smooth gesture of his hand. "Tell me where she is."

"To the best of my knowledge she is at the Daily Planet."

"That's a clone."

"Interesting."

"Don't pretend that you didn't know!"

"I meant, it's interesting that you just figured it out. I believed you two were much closer."

"It's not a game, dammit."

"That'd be the last thing in my mind."

"Then why?"

"As long as you didn't know, Luthor would still believe the intel the clone gathered for him."

"How practical of you, Bruce. Does anybody else in the League know?"

"Of course not. They would never agree to something like this."

"You say it like that's a bad thing."

Bruce returned to his desk, showing Superman his back.

"You will never stop Luthor if you don't start thinking ahead."

"Right now, I don't see that big a difference between the two of you."

Superman flew away, Bruce noticed, but not toward the Daily Planet.

He ignored the tightness in his chest with the same ease he used to disregard the rest of his scars.
