Ficlet: On the Shores of Marathon (PG13, JL, Prompt #2: Loss)

Title: On the shores of Marathon
Fandom: DC Comics
Prompt: #2, Loss
Word Count: About two hundred.
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: DC Comics owns all characters involved.
Summary: So it ends, for a while.

Flying at the speed of Hermes, the wind in her ears sounds like the patient roar of a malicious storm. The oppression she feels in her chest has nothing to do with the resistance of the air, which seems to open before her as if Aeolus himself felt the urgency of her mad dash. It's still not fast enough.

Infused by the wisdom of Athena, her thoughts race even faster than the ruins speeding below her. She, who has known eternity as a goddess, is re-experiencing it in every second. No, she repeats in her mind. No, she prays, orders, begs, demands. No. She knows it will happen nonetheless.

She flies faster.

She offers her soul for speed, and tastes something vile in her mouth when there's no answer but a distant laugh.

She flies faster.

Darkseid's monsters don't even attempt to block her anymore. She can feel the dark god's pitiless eyes watching. Not her, but what lies ahead.

She flies faster still.

She arrives in time to see Superman kiss Lois' corpse and rip apart his containment suit.
