Title: 793
Fandom: DC Comics
Prompt: #17, Lack of God.
Word Count: About two hundred and seventy.
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: DC Comics owns all characters involved. Not that Oracle pays too much attention to things like that.
Summary: This is what a happy ending looks like.
Author Notes: A sort of mash-up with A Better World, and a sequel to 172. Also, it's a somewhat abstract, i.e., lazier than usual, fic.

There are, as Batman expected, about a dozen well-developed underground resistance networks targtting the Justice Lords, most of which have been infiltrated by Oracle.

She isn't, necessarily, sabotaging any of them. This, too, isn't an unexpected development.

Oracle is beyond doubt aware that his own protocols for nullifying her -in the context of either side of a battle for the restoration of the previous status quo- must of necessity be definitive enough to make academic the uncertainty of whether he would actually kill her.

And as his knowledge of her countermeasures cannot be assumed to be anything but partial, the result of such a conflict is impredictable. Uncomputable. There is an irresponsible intellectual fascination in the idea of actually playing out that conflict, one that in less tranquil times he wouldn't have found the time or inclination to let himself contemplate.

For all the dedication they have both poured on their jobs, for all the disciplined focusing of reason on reality, it was always other people -the Dick Graysons and James Gordons of their lives- who provided the human reasons.

But they are gone, and nobody has or could replace them. Batman and Oracle live among, behind -and in that sense above- lost gods who have yet to realize that they are lost. They both know they are, but with the world quiet, they can afford to wait until things become clearer. Hopefully, they will reach the same conclusion, and if they don't...

For the time being, though, the perpetual routine of endlessly creative preparations aside, they are content to restrict their games to the chess board and her zero-g bedroom in the Watchtower.

.finis.

I'm getting little peaks at what your Justice Lords mash up universe is like, which is really making me want to write Justice Lords, which is good and also bad, because I have homework. :D Thanks!

The zero-g bedroom scares me as much as anything else, honestly. It's *a* solution; I'm not sure if I think it's a good one.

Given the progression from her bedroom to the Clocktower to their plane, I did wonder at the moment if she'd relocate to space. She has the resources, and an orbiting cloacked space station could fit the bill for (relative) safety and stealth.

I guess it's a proof of Barbara's relative emotional wellbeing that she still wants to and does interact face to face with the people around her.

She hasn't become a disembodied voice -- yet. You have a point there.

Maybe it has something to do with not being comicsBabs at all.

And this is why both Batman and Oracle are absolutely TERRIFYING as bad guys. ♥

Ahh, my favorite gloriously dysfunctional family. That being the Bat-family, of course.

They are very much fantastic, scary, and messed up, all at the same time.
