Title: 378
Fandom: DC Comics
Prompt: #13, Love Beyond Desire
Word Count: About a hundred and fifty.
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: DC Comics owns all characters involved. Not that Oracle pays too much attention to things like that.
Summary: Talent attracts attention.

It began shortly after she cracked the NATO mainframes for the first time. A congratulatory anonymous email she couldn't trace. Tips on interesting targets. Links to papers on number theory with surprising cryptography applications. After a while, requests for help with secondary projects; diversionary attacks, routine hacks, field scouting.

Extremely challenging things for her, offloadable busywork for her mysterious correspondent. Or training exercises, even. She could feel herself becoming better than she could have thought possible, just as she realized that she dedicated most of her available time to this work.

She didn't mind. She was being paid in the only thing you couldn't hack money from a bank and buy for yourself: skill.

There was also payment in knowing that such a person existed, in working with him or her, but she kept that information locked in the only unhackable place, deep inside her mind.

Street surveillance cameras turn to follow her as she walks to and from her school.

Jane smiles, and doesn't mind.

.finis.

...and now I want you to write the fic about the cyber-equivalent of DITF or War Games. Or, um. Nightwing.

Eeek. DITF would be really scary; Jane isn't really associated with physical danger, and Babs is very Bruce-like wrt her associates being put in danger's way.

Seriously the sexiest story about two people who have no contact that I've read in a month of Sundays.

:D Thanks! Writing Bat relationships is funny that way.

Original character of yours?

AFAIK? Although I don't think she'd be out of place hanging out with Utilitarian or Stargirl.

You should create more OC's in the DCU more often!

Oh Jane ... bless your cute lil' heart.

I hope it takes her a while to realize how naive is that assumption.

*Goodness*, that girl's young.

I wonder what's going to happen when she meets the Birds. (Or Spy Smasher.)

In my head, Babs already has a lot of contacts/sidekicks/etc that she keeps at a distance, both from herself and from the cape world; superheroics is only a part, a minor part, of how Babs operates.

The same goes, in an infinitely more disturbing fashion, for inside-my-head!Bruce.

Don't make me go there, I'm still recuperating from Batman: Snow, with Bruce and his team of people in need of things he can provide. It was scarier than the psychobat.

Though this is totally the way it must be, specially for Babs. The 'unhackable place' made me smile fondly :) how we wish!

Batman: Snow? Haven't heard of that. It's an Elseworlds?

Nope, not an Elseworlds. A story set early in Batman's career, it's the re-telling of Mr. Freeze's origin. Bruce is all cocky and over eager and Gordon and Harvey get mad at him for assuming they will jump through hoops for him.

*blushes* Sorry! My english was failing me last night after too many all nighters. *eyes comment above* Actually, it seems like my spanish was failing me too, lol. I was just reccaping Batman: Snow, where Batman recruits 5 people in need of purpose, so to speak, to be his back up. It's an early years story, kind of scary in the Bruce-is-disturbing department, but pretty cool. Victor Fries breaks my heart, the poor dear.

I uploaded it, if you want it! :) http://download.yousendit.com/B1938CF726A59148

Awww, look at the cute little sidekick. *hearts*

She's totally gonna grow up into a scary, scary woman, isn't she? *hearts more*

Also, this makes me think of Tim's 16th birthday and his 'How Babs Could Go Evil' theory.

Also, this makes me think of Tim's 16th birthday and his 'How Babs Could Go Evil' theory.

*hearts*

Of course, it was never fully explained to Tim how it could come to pass that Dick or Babs would go evil and he wouldn't be with them.

I'd like to leave proper fb, but it's late and I'm too verbose for that, if that makes any sense at all.

When puberty kicked in and the girl couldn’t settle for ordinary teenage rebellion, but had to start using a ridicules handle, develop a liking for heavy artillery and a fashion worse than Dick’s, Barbara had to ask herself were the hell she had failed.

Then 'Trinity' vanished without a trace, at the peak of a short, but glorious career, if you liked that kind of attention-drawing stunts and the limited number of people who’d ever been aware of her existence all though she was gone for good. Barbara had to disagree: *No one* just disappeared like that; there were always something left and she *always* found it.

In the end, Jane found her first.
“It was your search programs,” Jane said, taking a sip of her coffee. “Even if they were designed to look out for *my* patterns, you still left enough of a signature to track you down.”
The programs had been based on the original automatic search program that had brought her the girl in the first place, extended to look for cluster-activities, for wider pattern-recognition.
You did not pull off stunts like hers alone, after all.
“We have a job for you if you want it, Oracle.” She looked at Barbara in her wheelchair and smiled. “It has some perks I think you might like.”

Even with the name 'Trinity' I still had to read it twice to get it.
