Title: 111
Fandom: DC Comics
Prompt: #9, Orientation
Word Count: About a hundred and fifty
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: DC Comics owns all characters involved. Not that Oracle pays too much attention to things like that.
Summary: All things change.

It's the future. Of course you can walk. And run, fight, shoot, threaten, and all other activities associated with being Gotham City's Police Commissioner.

Most cops nowadays haven't known any Commissioner Gordon but you. You don't know how you feel about that.

You are married, somewhat surprisingly. To the DA, somewhat unsurprisingly.

You do things by the book. No bad cops in your force, and no capes in your city. It's not perfect, but it shouldn't be. It's Gotham.

You sleep well.

At night, the chip in your neck gives you back the memories you stashed in there, and connects your sleeping brain to the hidden remote terminals in your headboard. You are Oracle for the night, a ghost in the network, a lucid dream you don't remember when you wake up.

There's only the vaguest of memories of having dreamed. Sometimes fresh insights about cases, bits of intuition you don't try to explain.

I'm seriously going to pull out my Batman Beyond Dvds right now. I have an urgent need to rewatch in this context :)

HA! You did it! Glee!

*g* Probably the easiest meat puppet to take over is one's own original body.

Alternatively, if you are going to upload a branch of yourself and let the other become a very skilled Commissioner, the uploaded branch of you will probably want to stay close to her for monitoring. You know how ugly inter-branch fights can get.

OK, this is all great and all but, um, the no capes in Gotham part is sort of making me sad here. I like my Gotham with capes thank you very much. :p

Still, very awesome and very Babs/Oracle.

The Batman Beyond Gotham between Bruce's retirement and Terry picking up the suit must have been a weird one. Not that I wouldn't love to have canon/fic about it.

Yipes. And yet.

Is there *really* any other way this could go?

I wonder what Cass would look at this Commissioner Gordon and see.
Apr. 14th, 2007 02:43 pm (UTC)
Hmm. Now I'm wondering what Cass' POV during Like a spoke of the hubless wheel would look like in this universe.

It's the the crossoverness and *self-designed schizophrenia* that's especially makes this awesome to me.

And oh yeas, please, bring in Cass.
At night she creeps into their bedroom as the silent shadow she once was. The husband dreams ordinary man-dreams of no interest; it is the wife she has come to watch, to listen to.

Next morning there is a yet another unexplainable hit for Commissioner Gordon to solve, and she will do everything in her power to do so, for even though the targets are high-level Gotham criminals, she does not tolerate vigilantes in her city.
In a hurry, so not perfect. Oh well.

Maybe not perfect, but a fitting follow-up to this awesome story.

*self-designed schizophrenia* *g* Screwing their own minds for the good of the Mission is a (the?) basic modus operandi of the Bats.

to listen to. I like that very much! I had thought about Oracle getting in touch with Cass via electronic means, but, really, there's no need to. Cass can see all she needs to just by looking.

*cries* I will never catch up with all the fic I missed on your front! never! and it shall be my loss!

Now, if I could upload my conscious to the net while I sleep, catching up with LJ would be much easier.

Babs scares me and reminds me of Tim here. Is there anyone in Gotham who isn't a master compart..compartim.. person who compartimentalizes? ...that's not a word! goddamit. But you catch my drift, I hope. I missed being scared and totally blown away by your Gotham *glomps*
Apr. 15th, 2007 04:22 am (UTC)
You are right; Gothamites are scary basically because of their minds, and what they do with and *to* them. Breaking themselves to better fit the impossible demands of their jobs/obsessions is part and parcel of what they do (both for those in Arkham and those who put them there).

(If you do find a way to upload, do let me know! Pretty please?)

once again, i am terrified. yay!

I love this so much! I don't know why, it must appeal to my inner sci-fi/cyberpunk fan.

Taking the secret identity thing one step further...
