Title: Grace
Fandom: Dexter
Prompt: #29, Repression
Rating: PG13
Warnings: None besides the fandom.
Summary: Dexter is a good son.
Spoilers: Spoilers for S1.
Word Count: About a hundred and fifty words.

No child could be more obedient than Dexter. In his own way, he looks up to him as much as Debra does. It's not the kind of love she shows, but it's the sort of thing Harry can understand. It's enough.

He's polite. Well-mannered. He cleans his room with dedicated care. Harry checks it up later with a cop's eyes, and tells him about everything he overlooked. It's good practice, and he's getting better.

It's not that he isn't sick. Harry knew he was hurt the moment he saw him standing still in the fly-infested bloodbath inside that container, and a few years later he came to be sure his son would end up a reckless killer. End up dead.

But Dexter has dealt with his problem. He's sick, but he won't harm anybody -not anybody that matters, at least- and, most importantly, he will survive. Harry, who has seen drugs and alcohol destroy both good and bad people taking families and strangers with them, is very proud of him.

He still sleeps with a gun under his pillow. Still has the occasional nightmare where he has to use it.

*nods* Dexter has the excuse of being insane. I'd very much want to know what made Harry take the decisions he took.
