Fic: Lateral Moves (DCU, PG13)

Title: Lateral Moves
Rating: PG13
Fandom: DCU
Summary: Tactical changes aren't incompatible with strategic consistency.
Author Notes: Spoilery for the latest Robin.

It was easier than he thought it would be. That didn't mean it was easy; nothing that had anything to do with keeping Bruce as close to functional as possible ever was. It was as dangerous and complex as any other of the duties entailed by being Robin, and, just as Robin's role, it was an ever-shifting goal.

Batman needed a Robin. That was as true today as it had ever been. It was just that Bruce seemed now to need a son, too.

Having given Bruce the chance to be a good father by letting him 'skip work' for personal reasons, Tim went back to his date.

It was easier than he thought it would be.

It's so bad to love how wonderfully, scarily dedicated Tim is to Robin and all that job entails. Batman needs a Robin? I'll train and study until I'm an instrument of efficient justice. Bruce needs a son? I'll start putting more into this Tim Drake, normal-teenage-boy persona.

You're too good at doing a lot with a little.

I was just looking at your icon, and it occurs to me that it's usually Tim working inside the Robin uniform, but it's Robin hiding out in the Tim guise. I mean... when Robin's out there, yes, he's all about The Mission and justice, etc., but that's also when he's the most *himself*. Making friends, getting all introspective, *growing* and being active. When it's Tim out and about, he's an outsider observing and then reacting, and he's always careful that what he does doesn't affect the Batfamily negatively.

That icon is too much. I could get so lost in this thread of idea. Tim is so *plastic*!

You're right about Tim, he always seems to be acting when in Tim mode, especially in the Robin comic. It reminds me of in Young Justice when he was Mr. Sarcastic and told Cassie it was partially so he could practice adopting a persona for a long period of time, and Cassie goes "Isn't that what you do with Robin?" and Tim is blank for a second. No Cassie, Robin isn't the persona!
It's my favorite icon, I made it from Young Justice and Chien did the "Integrate" and fancy trimmings.
Have you read the Timfinity fics? http://community.livejournal.com/timfinity http://lovesetfire.com/to_timfinity/andbeyond.html They prove that everybody needs a Robin, and how plastic Tim really is.

I love you. I just...I really fucking love you.

Having given Bruce the chance to be a good father by letting him 'skip work' for personal reasons, Tim went back to his date.

*giddy* Oh, Timmy. ♥
