Ficlet: Confidential Sources (PG13, DC AU)

Title: Confidential Sources
Rating: PG13
Fandom: DC AU
Summary: Lois hates when people lie to her.
Author Notes: Following a prompt by katarik, who also was kind enough to beta this.

"You shouldn't smoke."

"Fuck you, Kent."

"Sorry, I forgot you are from Smallville. I bet your parents taught you cigarettes are the devil's weed."

"My father used to smoke once a year on his birthday. Mom pretended she didn't know, but made nothing but salads all week."

"So you were raised by a freaking model family. Excuse me if I don't bow, I don't like standing up after sex."

"What? Are you going to ask me about my family?"

"I did my own research."

"Didn't you? Enlighten me, Daily Planet's Clark Kent. Tell me about my family life."

"Your never knew your mother. Your father was in military intelligence, under the cover of working as a researcher for an encyclopedia. He - "

"He was a bastard. Lied to me all my life."

"I'm sure he wished it hadn't been that way."

"I'm sure you are sure, but that's because you are a boy scout. He enjoyed secrets. Loved keeping everybody in the dark, even me, and keeping the secrets for himself."

"You figured it out on your own pretty soon. When you were nineteen, right?"

"Fifteen. But I saw no point in telling him. The son of a bitch wanted to play, I could play the game, too."

"Is that why you do what you do?"

"I do what I do because information brokering is profitable, Smallville."

"Yet you discovered my secret identity but haven't sold it to anybody."

"Still could. If anything about me ever comes up in your articles..."

"I'd never do that. You are an anonymous source."

"You gave me a name. I was happier when nobody knew I existed."

"Readers need names, even fake ones, for an article to make an impact. It turns reporting into stories. You didn't like 'Oracle'?"

"Too nerdish. It sounds like I watch too much TV."

"I could call you 'Trinity' in my next article."

"Do that, and I'll sell your secret identity to Intergang for five bucks."

"You wouldn't."

"Why? Because you are a good fuck? Superhuman stamina or not, I never let pleasure interfere with business."

"You wouldn't because Superman is an unique source of information, because it's handy to have a reporter working with you... and because the really good secrets you prefer to keep for yourself."

"You can be a real asshole, Kent, you know that?"

"I guess it's the company I keep."

Yet another lovely fic from Marcelo, and yet another Oracle. :P One can only wonder who gets the Oracle treatment next. (Personally, I'm surprised that Ted Kord hasn't yet. I'd think that one would practically write itself.)

Your icon is awesome beyond my capacity with words to express.

Yet another lovely fic from Marcelo, and yet another Oracle. :P *laughs* In my defense, I didn't come up with this one.

One can only wonder who gets the Oracle treatment next.

I have something in store, but it's going to take me a few months before I go through my other fannish commitments.

Oh, well done. I couldn't quite believe a Lois who kept secrets like that, but you made me believe it. The bit with her father makes everything plausible.

Also, *puts on Lois/Clark tinhat*

Thanks! That was what I gambled to story on; Lois-as-Oracle is difficult to conceive, as you said, because of the secrecy. She's very much NotABat in that way. I thought a different upbringing would change her enough (while still reflecting canon!Lois' adversarial relationship with her father), adn I'm glad it made it plausible for you.

I just realized something. If you want a Lois that's *this* Lois, it helps to have a different Superman as well.

Now this is a Lois and Clark I would ship very much :D Also, for once I figured it out before you spelled it out!

:D Hey, I'm not that cryptic, am I?
Feb. 23rd, 2007 02:07 pm (UTC)
Oooh, intriguing!

You deserve a long thinky reply to this awesome twisty little thing, but all I can manage is squeaking with excitement, as a poor substitute for punching the air and screaming "yes!"
Feb. 23rd, 2007 03:48 pm (UTC)
*preens* Thanks!
Feb. 23rd, 2007 05:00 pm (UTC)
Huh. I just punched the air and screamed - well, exclaimed - "yes!"

You = awesome.

I = win. Because I get a you.

One wonders which of them Lex would find more irritating, Lois the reporter or Lois the Oracle.

I think Lois the reporter. Lois the Oracle has less qualms about taking his money, and is the kind of operative Luthor knows how to deal with. Honest, loudmouthed, unflinchingly talented people who don't hide or play behind the courtains but actually stand there and *say* what they want to say irregardless of Lex Luthor being there must be much more disturbing to Lex.

The reporter is both more irritating and (potentially) more dangerous. The operative he can handle, he can manipulate, he can kill in secret if need be.
Feb. 23rd, 2007 05:01 pm (UTC)
She's opposed to her father's way of doing things and still ends up acting just like him with regards to secrets anyway. Mostly.

That's funny to me.

That's funny to me.

*g* Ain't that how it often goes, between children and parents?
Feb. 23rd, 2007 06:22 pm (UTC)
Lois - scary and awesome in every universe. *loves*
Feb. 23rd, 2007 06:29 pm (UTC)
Ain't she? *g*

Eee! Lois/Information OTP! I think I am pretty much conditioned to squeal with glee at Oracle AUs now. That's probably mostly your fault.
"I could call you 'Trinity' in my next article."
Hee. Oh the snark. ^^

This is a very 'shippable, very fun Lois/Clark, and her bitterness makes it all the better.

*g* Thanks! I had fun writing their interaction; I think this Lois might make Clark be an slightly different kind of Superman.

once again, i must make vowel sounds of glee at you.

One of my lesser reasons to love Lois is how well she brings out the "flawed" side of Clark.
