Ficlet: Light (DCU, PG13)

Title: Light
Rating: PG13
Fandom: A very timeline-mixed DCU.
Summary: It's the JLA's job to save both entire worlds and individual lives. Sometimes it works the other way, too.
Author Notes: The JLA is from Morrison's early run, the rest of the world is just about pre-OYL.
Realization: That didn't look as crazy in my head as it does on the screen.

It was fitting for them to fight as the so-called heroes and villains raged across the skies in yet another meaningless battle. They alone, flesh and blood, knew of death.

Green Lantern found her broken body left on a rooftop as a message to all false fathers that had led her astray. Cassandra had refused, at last, to kill, and she had paid the price in pain required by her mother.

No, she gestured with her head as he carefully lifted her in hands of light.

"Don't worry, even Batman lets me do this with him. Wait, I don't think that came out right..."

She gestured more emphatically, finding in her broken body enough strength for a word. "Fight."

The monsters he had been fighting, taking advantage of his care for Cassandra, had surrounded them. Kyle steeled himself. "Alright, I have to defeat a dozen bad guys with a bleeding Batgirl in my arms. I bet these things never happened to Hal."

Cassandra slowly moved her hand, clasping Kyle's hand around the ring.

His eyes widened.

Her instincts were perfect, his imagination infinite.

The ring sang in light as it had never done before.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

You are brilliant.

Go for it.

Well, I was going to say "Cass Lantern!" but that felt rather weak.
Lady Shiva is a brilliant dead end.

Hmm, that's something to consider. She still has ground to cover -I'd love to see what she could do in a few decades with access to a pit or some other de-aging resource- but it's true that her goals are rather narrow-minded (as happens with all true masters of any art?).

Re: Well, I was going to say "Cass Lantern!" but that felt rather weak.
My thoughts on a Lady Shiva mini-series pitch vacillate between:

a) Lady Shiva discovers a Nerima-alike town in DCU-China, full of teenage martial artists who outclass her woefully ... no, let me clarify. She's probably better than they are at the nitty-gritty of hand-to-x combat but their insane martial paths have them wielding chi and making wuxia-class moves in 1/3 of the time it took her to do what she does.

b) the Lady Shiva Time Travel Adventure, wherein she goes into the past and encounters previous bearers of the title

c) something similar in tone to Rucka's run on Elektra, where she starts to run into the limits of hyperspecialization in a world like the DCU. Sure, she can probably evade cameras easily enough and need not fear metal detectors (she *is* the weapon), but laser grids? Covert cybernetic implants? Spy satellites? Nano-surveillance? These are all things the Bats (and Oracle) are very much at home with (see other rock ;) ) I'm thinking of that fic where she raised/trained Tim and made him Shakti; he was using his near-Oracle talents to make her job easier before she even bothered to train him.

I guess that's the difference between the Bats and her. She's an artist, they are people with jobs to do.

Anyway, she doesn't seem very inclined to add nontraditional skills to her repertoire. A shame. Imagine what she could do if she added new skills - or new technologies.

I like all of these ideas, although C, unless she finds a new path, would be rather depressing.

Boy. That *would* broaden her horizons a bit, wouldn't it

You know, I think I should open a thesaurus before reading one of your fics, because there's only so many times one can use the words awesome and brilliant and amazing, before it gets really boring. ;)

Somebody really needs to make some Elseworlds from your writing. *nodnod*

:D :D That'd probably send DC into bankruptcy, but I'd die of squee. Being utterly useless for drawing or anything similar, graphic representation of stories amaze me.
