Title: Love, Loyalty and Other Useful Lies
Rating: PG13
Fandom: DCU
Summary: No matter the universe, Slade always plays by his own rules.
Author Notes: Earth-2. Not a CSA AU as much as a CSA-verse adjunct. Many thanks for katarik for beta help.

He remembered how things were before the Crime Syndicate came along. Pretty much the same.

He had been in the plane that dropped the U.S.'s first A-bomb over Sicily, and had run security when Lucky Luciano handed over the second half of the hit's payment to the President. He had commanded the team that burned the CIA's Afghan opium fields by order of the DEA, and had killed the DEA's top brass when the CIA put together enough money to pay the Army for it.

In an army full of treacherous mercenaries, he had been the best. Adeline had said so, and the unfaithful bitch had seldom lied when his work and their payment was on the line. She always made sure he knew about her affairs, both as a sting and as a warning. He didn't care much anyway.

He did care, though, when she sold him to the Army labs as a guinea pig. He cared so much that as soon as he broke free from the labs he looked for her and killed her with his own hands.

She had been good. He'd have to use an eye patch all of his life as a proof of how good. But she hadn't been good enough.

The brass would fret -she had slept with so many five-star generals that at least one of them would want to kill him, maybe- but he wasn't planning on going back to the Army.

There was far better tail to tap and money to steal in the underground anyway.

And this *is* Slade, even if it's not a Slade I ever saw in canon. He's still recognizably Slade Wilson, and that's still recognizably Adeline Kane. They aren't the versions I know and love, but they're still themselves.

I have no idea how you pulled that off.

Re: *ironic use of icon*
*wins* That was the main thing that worried me, straying too far from their characters to fit the CSA universe. But if you say it's them, then my work here is done. *g*

Re: *ironic use of icon*
Most people wouldn't have been able to pull it off. I know I wouldn't have. But you didn't just go 'okay, reverse everything about them!' you kept certain core settings the same and left enough *unsaid* that details of childhood are left up to the imagination.

This Adeline, for example... in canon, she joined the military after annulling her marriage to her abusive first husband. I wonder when -- and how -- she joined here. An Adeline who never decided on self-discipline is an Adeline I can see pulling some of the stuff in this story.

Wow. Yeah, OK, I'm impressed. It's an AU and they aren't the Slade and Adeline we know and love but, they still are Slade and Adeline. Very nice. *nodnod*

Thanks a lot! Coming up with details about Earth-2's history and political structure (below the CSA level) was a lot of fun.
