What's up with comics?

As of late, I'm not finding much squee-worthy in the comics I follow/read now and then/listen to gossip on. This isn't an unprecedented situation -I've been disenchanted with current comics in the past, usually a week or two before I found something new! and! awesome!-, and probably it has at least as much to do with my personal situation than with the comics themselves, but it's disquieting nonetheless.

The Bat-titles are made of blah. Robin is bizarro!emo!amnesiac!Bruce-trusting!Robin. Batman is - blah? Still insane? Alfred is awesome, but he doesn't have his own title. Nightwing is pretty. Er. And nice to look at? But he seems to have lost his not always sure grip on sanity.

Teen Titans Can. Eat. My. Shorts. Great characters, lots of character choppage.

Birds of Prey... I don't know what's going on in Babs' head right now (blackmailing Lois?!? To her face?! That was *stupid* and *amateurish*, and Babs is neither, dammit!), what happened to the plotlines, and where the heck is my favorite covert action materminded team.

Legion, well, I kinda dropped it after Supergirl took over it, and, checking in now and then, I haven't found reason to come back.

I can't tell what the hell is going on in Outsiders from one issue to the next, nor, I suspect, can the Outsiders. It's just a lot of angst, more angst, and flailing. Angsty flailing.

The Superman titles are failing to make me care. Badly.

Ditto the JLA. The visuals are porny as hell (the JLA in civvies will *always* have an access pass to my id), but I'm not getting either interesting team dynamics (ok, Bruce and Clark snarking is gold, but that's not a team) or the legendary kickassing they are there *for*. The JLA is about defeating an armada of godlike things from the Nth dimension and calling it another tuesday. They *define* pro heroics. Or should.

52? 52 is the title where Skeets is the evil mastermind (is he still? I lost track.). Stuff happens. People die. More stuff happens. I suspect I don't have the budget to buy the drugs that'd put me in the appropriate frame of mind to follow this.

Even Cable/Deadpool, for crying out loud, is almost depressing! Granted, it's Wade-style depression, so we still get him to do adorably insane things, but it's not the Deadpool who hallucinated giving Cable a massage and wore yellow panties to the X-Men's eternal trauma.

I have to agree with you. Most of the comics out there are sucky, and the ones I WANT to read aren't being put out. *sigh*

I feel like I should reply to the Babs comment, but honestly I don't know how to reply without lying to your face. Maybe a shiny, Oracle icon will distract you for a while.

Also, I notice that Iron Man: Hypervelocity isn't in this list. Is that because you're not reading it, or because you're enjoying it?

Ah, yes! Hmm. I enjoyed it, although I'm not sure the teen!Tony mentioned there matches very well the one from that storyline when they lifted a teenage Tony Stark from the past, or with one that'd become the Tony Stark of Extremis.

Nonetheless, it's a good read so far. Maybe we can get the armor to replace Tony in main continuity?

What's up with comics?
I know that was a rhetorical question, but I'm going to offer an answer anyway: New Earth. That's what's up with it, some kind of massive editorial re-direction that...makes no sense to me. Everyone feels drained and livid and not quite themselves.

I'm enjoying FLASH and OUTSIDERS, though both have some major flaws, as well as NIGHTWING, but GREEN ARROW is the only (mainstream comic) book I'm consistently enjoying month-to-month. I stopped reading both Batman and Superman's titles when their progeny showed up, and Tim in ROBIN has moments of awesome, but he's mostly just *weird*.

Green Arrow

You know, you're absolutely right. That's the only core-DC book I actually buy anymore. Even if it is needlessly heedlessly decompressed.

It's really kind of *sad* that Bruce Wayne and Batman are more recognizable in *Green Arrow* than in their/his own titles.

*nods* I see why; the idea of Ollie as a badass, crafty, machiavellian Mayor fills the heart with squee, Mia is awesome, and there are some great moments in there.

I haven't even opened a DC comic in… I don't even want to think how long. I check on s_d to see if it's going to make me want to chew on my keyboard, and if it is, I just don't get it. This has resulted in me not getting much of anything at all.

But I want to, I really do! I swear if I find anything to squee over I will.

But doesn't s_d itself make you want to chew on things? Maybe it's just me. ;)

Saw the latest fanart post, did you?

(I'm watching to see how long it takes to fall into obscenities.)

The Magneto one? If there's something new, I'm not sure I want to know.

...well. I *do* want to know, because it's fun to watch from the sidelines. :D

Re: Comics and S/D
*snort* Yeah, isn't there a group called comics_fanart. Oh, yep, it's high lighted and in bold. Granted, there aren't as many people who will feedback you there, but you aren't required to post your own stuff so long as you credit.

Well, this week's JLA Classified is pretty fun. And it has entertainingly bad physics, which could be a plus or a minus, depending.

I still buy Teen Titans, but mostly because Geoff made me love Eddie and also this month's issue had a Case for Steph. I will probably drop it with this Titans East business, because HATRED AND LOATHING. Expect a post from me on that in the next day or so.

I haven't been buying Outsiders, but I read 44 and will purchase it because of Jason and Dick. I bought Green Arrow 70.

Nightwing... meh. (It hurts something in my soul to say that about Marv Wolfman.)

Robin makes me twitch MADLY. I am not happy about switching Johns for Beechen -- Johns at least had moments that made me shriek with joy even though I loathe his Slade. Beechen's sole good was that with him writing, Tim remembered Steph and Cass, and Johns wrote in Tim having a Case for Steph.

I still love BoP, but. The Lois thing? Um. No. However! They're meeting the Secret Six soon -- BARDA VS. KNOCKOUT FTW.

Mostly what I buy now is backissues and trades. Not so much monthly floppies.

Which saddens me.

Well, these are the some of the ones that are making me squee lately. *tries to be helpful*

Welcome To Tranquility and Gen13, X-Factor, Blue Beetle and Green Arrow, JSA (which kicks JLA ass), Nextwave (but that's almost over) and Checkmate.

Hopefully you'll find something new! and! awesome! soon. It sucks when comics aren't bringing you joy.

*grabs Nextwave's ankles* Please don't go!

Well, I forgot to list it, but, speaking of Ellis, Fell is rather good. Creepy and weird too.

Why do all the really good ones have to end and the bad ones just keep on going and going and going?

Creepy and weird too.

Best kind of good, as far as I'm concerned. ;)

Heh. I think Joe Quesada keeps following Warren Ellis around telling him to bring back the Nextwave somehow.

Honestly, right now, I'm in this fandom for back-issues and fic. And yet I'm subscribed to 52 just to see how it all comes out.
