Ficlet: No likely end (PG13, DCU)

Title: No Likely End
Fandom: DCU
Rating: PG13
Summary: It begins with hundreds of millions of deaths averted.

The shame of having been so wrong (but how?; he still didn't know) still stung, but raising young Kal-El was compensation more than enough.

He grew up a man to be proud of. Not a scientist like his father, but a natural leader. Kind, as such things were measured in Krypton, and with an undeniable charisma.

There was talk of inducting Kal-El into the Council, and Jor-El's own research -now shifted to the arcane fields where biology, metaphysics and cosmology became a branch of mathematics- had begun to earn him the respect he had lost during his youth's fearful folly.

They were good years for the House of El.

Good years for Krypton.

Then Darkseid came.

.finis.

Thanks! The DCU is so entangled, characters and stories crisscrossing, with worlds or universes always in the balance, that I don't think you can change practically anything without changes rippling through the universe.

One of my favorite things about S:TAS was their handling of Darkseid - he *is* that kind of universe-level threat.

Oh.

Oh, YIKES.

Marcelo, um. I kinda worship you, in that terror-filled adoring manner.

Yeah. Everything in the DCU comes with a price tag, I guess, including salvation.

Perhaps *specially*.

What's this ....
... an illustration of Murphy's Law of Alternate Realities?

Re: What's this ....
*laughs*

I guess one of DC's implicit rules is that the main continuity is Pareto-optimal, and you can't make anything better without messing up something else.

I don't buy that, but that seems to be the case in (meta)canon, perhaps for dramatic reasons.

Oh *dear*. But of course Darkseid would.

*nods* Specially as Jor-El was foolishly playing around with part of the Anti-Life equation... *grins*

Well, I have nothing to be ashamed of. No one else got that.
