Ficlet: Five Ways Timothy Drake Never Died

Title: Five Ways Timothy Drake Never Died
Rating: PG13
Author Notes: Mostly DCU AUs, with a Timfinity thing thrown in for good measure.

No meta in his team. No appropriate equipment, no planned strategy, no ace in the hole. Just sacrificing himself to win all universes a few extra minutes, to get Superboy Prime's attention away from Nightwing.

Bruce would be snippy.

His last word was "Steph."

* * *

An approaching horde. All of his companions dead.

The dark-haired boy shrugged and cocked his guns.

There were other worlds besides this one.

* * *

It wasn't the torture. It wasn't the drugs. It wasn't the Joker's laugh -coming from outside, coming from inside, lodged in his lips- what finally broke him. It was Batman's face as he pointed the gun at him.

So sad. So vulnerable.

He took the gun to his right temple and shot.

* * *

He had never been so terrified in his entire life. He realized he never again would be.

"Nice photos," said the clown, hitting him again.

He would die here.

"Really good files," said the clown, hitting him again.

He'd never meet Dick or Jason.

"But he's mine, you know?" said the clown, swinging the crowbar for the last time.

* * *

"The Canary is dead, as is my daughter. Should you refuse my inheritance, I will kill you, and the Art will die when I do."

Batman bowed slightly, arms and legs broken. "I made a promise, Shiva."

"It's a pity," she said, letting her gray hair fall over her shoulders.

Her kick was perhaps the most beautiful human movement he had ever seen.

I loved the self-sacrifice of 3, Timmy not letting the blood be on Batman's hands. 4 was sad and messed up and completely possible.

Thanks! I think there are few characters and periods I'm more fascinated with than Tim during those early years before he introduced himself to the family.

These are really effective. The clown one, especially.

Thanks! That's one of the pivotal scenes of the Gotham mythos - and one of the scariest ones, too.

These are lovely. I especially love #3, because, oh god, not only is Batman sad, it shows and that just breaks my heart, and the last one because, well, Shiva. *shrugs* I own my kinks. ;)

:) Not that I don't understand them! Shiva and Tim, in any form and combination, is always a source of glee.

Your writing makes me shiver!
these snippets seem like tiny parts of much larger stories. You write so little, but as a reader I almost feel I can see the entirity of the story. That never ceases to amaze me.

The Joker taking out Tim *before* he's Robin makes me hug myself and wail.

It seems hardly... fair, doesn't it? But yet somehow Gotham-plausible.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY CRAP MARCELO. Oh, TIM.

Dying to give Dick a little more time, and his last word is Steph. I. OH MY BOY. One wonders how different Superman/Batman 26 would be told from Kon's perspective.

I kinda want that Tim to meet Bucky.

TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIM. OH TIM MY BOY. WAH. *sniffle* Because of *course* that's what would get to him most.

sdfkjlfdsjkdfskjfdjskdfjkfdsjk AIGH. I CAN SEE THAT. AIGH AIGH AIGH. If you write Joker/Robin I will KILL you.

Shiva/Tim to the VERY END. Batman. !!!

*nods* And, dammit, it should had been, I think.

If you write Joker/Robin I will KILL you. Don't worry, it'd kill me first.

Just… absolutely. Baby!Tim should have died like that, by everything we know about Gotham.

Yeah. It's *Gotham*.

I guess... I guess Gotham doesn't touch the kids that are damaged enough already. Or that will be.

*g* In my personal multifanon, Jake *is* a Tim. Or vice versa; much like in physical spacetime, I think that a multi-multiversal meta-law is that archetypal laws are the same no matter what multiverse you choose as your frame of reference (e.g., for a King fan, the DCU is another level of the Tower, for a DCU fan, the Tower is a representation of the multiverse, for a Wildstorm fan they are all isomorphic to the bleed, and yet the archetypal laws are the same.)

Oh god, 4. It's going to haunt me for a while, I know it is. Not so long ago, I wrote that fic about what if each of the Robin had never been born, and now I can't help wondering if the backstory behind "Tim was never born" was actually "the Joker killed Tim before anyone knew he existed". That's a mind trip, getting your own AUs turned against you that way.

He's so young and innocent and not Robin yet, and the Joker kills him anyway. What gets me there is that the Joker is cheating. But he's mine, you know? but at the time Tim is nothing to Batman. Also the crowbar, which is the Robin-killing weapon but Tim isn't one.

It's... yeah. It's one thing to kill a Robin. But that wasn't a Robin, that was just a child.

Although I wonder what the hell the holding of that distinction says about Bruce (or about me).

You have a solid notion of the difference between a soldier or a civilian?

(You realize it also means that here, to Joker, a Robin is a Robin is a Robin. Robin isn't something you become, it's something you are. Joker has opinions on the values of Bat identities. That's terrifying.)

I wouldn't feel as conflicted as I do about my feelings on the Robin idea if we weren't leaving in a world where child soldiers are a reality.
