I got stalled on this prompt, so I'll just post this before I go crazy.

Title: Pieces
Fandom: Dexter
Characters: Dexter
Prompt: #5, Multiple Personality
Rating: PG13
Warnings: None besides the fandom.

Spoilers: Up to S1E11.
Author Notes: Will be rendered AU by S1E12, surely.
Word Count: About 180

I know what he's trying to do. He wants to cut me up in pieces, drain the blood out of them and then... rearrange me like one of his puzzles. He's been playing with my life as he does with his victim's bodies, pushing and cutting and probing until I become whatever he wants me to be.

I think he wants a partner. The man I would be if I hadn't met Harry. The monster that boy who saw his mother die would have grown into.

He wants to cut the Code away from me, unleash the monster he wants.

But he's wrong. The Code was never about taming the monster. The Code was the monster's best weapon. There has never been a conflict inside me between Harry's lesson and my own taste for blood, not since a long time ago.

I am a monster. And I am a cop's son. I will guide these cops to where I know he's taking her, and with their help I will kill him.

By the Code.

There's not a part of me who doubts this.

You are *creepy*.

He is creepy.

And this story, above all others so far, is what makes me think Dexter and Slade would *get* each other. I'm not quite sure what that says about either me or them.

Dexter, adopted by a clinical psychologist. Dexter as a profiler. Dexter as part of the Criminal Minds team. Dexter in Arkham, walking through the hallways, planning.

Everybody in the team would know that he's a sociopath, of course. But so smart and well trained by his father that he's a functional one. Tricks all formal evaluations. He's a monster, and they know it, but he's their monster, he's useful. They are all experts in putting themselves inside a killer's mind, but he's a master, because it doesn't really take him any effort. He's a ruthless negotiator, and an ice-cold field agent. He's the guy you send into the wolf's jaws because, really, it's not as if anything will make him any crazier.

He hasn't killed - that they know about. And if there's a potential sociopath out there, what a better place to keep an eye on him that the BAU, right?

Perhaps his hunger is satisfied by helping them hunt other monsters. Proving that he's the best, or that he could be if he bothered to get his hands bloody. His father's makeshift of a "cure".

Dexter with a Ph.D. in psychiatry, working for the FBI, wearing his monster almost in the skin, because it's not as if he can really fool his teammates. He just has to play the game well enough. They know he knows. He knows they know he knows.

It's a complex, harrowing game for his freedom and his life.

He loves it.

The concept of a functional sociopath is one that makes me make funny faces.

And your ficly thing makes me make keyboardmashy noises. !!!

(Also, dude, now I desperately want to see Amanda Waller using Dexter.)

Dude, she *would*. She would use *canon* Dexter. She would know about Dexter and don't do anything; after all, his killings are way acceptable as a "price" to have ready a "fire and forget" weapon (that is, "forward proofs of a bad guy being a bad guy, wait for news of the guy disappearing misteriously."

And if he's found... hey, he *is* a sociopath.

Lots of meta about how other heroes aren't that different from Dexter (specially Bruce).

Lots of meta about how she *isn't* that different anyway.
