Yuletide reveal

I wrote two fics this time (I wanted to write more, but given my schedule it'd have been irresponsible to claim more).

Entelechy (Cable/Deadpool in both senses of the term). I don't think I succeeded with this story. Stuff is weird but not very funny, and Wade is just half of his usual self.

Turing Test (a 2001 fic). I like this one more. The language is clunky and, save for a couple of key details, it tells quite a bit more than it shows (the plot nudged me in that direction, but I should have resisted it better), but I think the core idea behind the fic is both logical and meaningful, so there you go.

Lessons learned this Yuletide:

  • If I feel meh about a story, it's probably not going to work out.

  • Simple ideas sometimes have complex implementations.

  • I need to get much better at getting across specific images and moods in a more indirect way.

  • outlawpoet is a beta rock star (I already knew that, but it bears repeating).

Batman: Tenses (an old mini)

You are a good guy, but you can't stop seeing the future, and it's terrible. It's always terrible. What would that do to you? How would you react? What would you become? Who would you harm along the way?

Year One Brucie was an unmitigated idiot; he erred by overdoing it. Batman: Tenses Brucie... isn't Brucie, but a Bruce-with-secrets. That difference is everything.

This Bruce's demons aren't bat-shaped, not really. He's colder, darker, both rawer and more polished. Not so much clinically insane as somebody very, very hurt you don't want to be on the wrong side of. Clearly a hero, certainly not a sociopath, but not the fundamentally nice Bruce of Batman: The Animated Series.

IIRC, Alfred doesn't appear in this mini, and I'm not sure about how he would fit. That says a lot about it.

If right now you feel like somebody is walking over your grave... we M's are plotting

Just so this isn't an empty post: I didn't like the Quantum of Solace opening, but I loved the song. I think it has very Craig!Bond lyrics. It describes a rough world of damaged and damaging people, something more savage than other incarnations of Bond.

Which is why I didn't like QoS that much: the villain and his plot were Brosnian. This is a much more damaged, but also more emotional (and hence more dangerous to everybody involved) Bond. Even if it begins not being personal for him, it has to be personal for the bad guy. They have to have a relationship for this to work - Craig!Bond doesn't play chess (which is a villain's game), but neither does (or should) he play blackjack, which is a nihilist's game. He plays poker as a contact sport, and then breaks your head against a bathroom wall.
