fic: The other side of the joke

PG13 ficlet, short. A Gotham AU, if you will.

The Yakuza hitmen in Japan, dead from blows few people in the world could have recognized. The human smuggler in Hong Kong, shot in the head, said the experts, from two miles away. The bloodbath in Rio, fifteen men killed with the same knife in the same night.

And then the killings came to Gotham, and the city had only thought it knew what bloody meant. By gun, by bomb, by knife, by venom, criminals started dying everywhere, and everybody was a criminal, more or less, in Gotham.

They only caught him because his butler gave him away. And even after the hundreds of bodies, his money bought enough of the law that he was declared insane. Not that there was much of a doubt for those who saw him.

Now he sits in his cell in Arkham, meditating, waiting in the dark like an sleeping bat.

They light a warning signal against the Gotham sky every time he escapes.

You always leave me flailing, and it sucks because I want to give you nuanced, constructive flailing. But dood! Perfect AU!

Thanks so much! Flailing works for me just right. *g*

:D Those are my favorite bits! I love the idea of people in Gotham seeing the signal in the sky and going "Oh god he's loose again."

Come to think of it, why don't they have a Joker signal? I guess at least they have citywide alert on all TV channels and radios...

Yes. Exactly. Bruce just doesn't understand moderation. If he were to kill, I think it would be like this.

OMG you're so right ...
... and he knows it too - that's the point! :D

Also, what Betty said.

And also, FLAIL.

Re: ha-HA!

But... yes. There is a *reason* Bruce and Jason always connected so well.

Yet another AU spawned by that one throwaway comment I made. But yes, this is dark and creepy and perfectly Bad!Bruce. 'Everyone is a criminal in Gotham' indeed.

Poor Alfred. :(

Some things are just too dark not to write them :).
Aug. 15th, 2006 11:55 pm (UTC)

So very, very creepy.

*g* Thanks!

Oh man!!! I'm jealous. This is freakin' fantastic. I think it's sorta fitting that Alfred turned him in.

I think it's sorta fitting that Alfred turned him in. I'm never going to write that scene, but the idea sort of broke my heart.

Glad you liked the fic!

I lick your scary brain.

Also, I like your brain, but the Freudian typo is funnier.

*hee* True!

Woo, wow, I like this image. It turns the strange hopeful/ominous feeling of our Batsignal into just straight-on scary. Nice work.
Aug. 16th, 2006 01:25 pm (UTC)

Hmm, your icon === *exactly* how this Bruce looks like, I think. *loves*

Meep! That's just...whoa.

That is so *perfect*. A succinct telling of what could have been, if Bruce hadn't placed his faith in the value of life. I love how the story follows this muddy timeline, from his training to his homecoming to the use of the signal light. I can just picture how torn Alfred would be before calling him in. ::sniff::
Great delivery.

Thanks so much! This ended up being a whole series of ficlets, but this first one is still my favorite.

I've read most of the rest of your otherside verse ficlets. Very good, on the whole. (Although I'll respectfully disagree with you on how the "Backflow" idea turned out. I didn't like it initially, because I can't see regular-universe!Steph working with this Bruce. And I really didn't like it once he got hold of Metron's gate technology and started pulling in All The Dead(?) Robins That Ever Were. It makes him too damned omnipotent.)

Back to the main part, now I'm wondering...where does he draw the line? Does he draw the line somewhere? Does a teenager who shoplifts or smokes pot have to worry about a slug in the back of the skull if he's/she's unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? Does an adult? What happens to the poor man/woman who steals food to help feed his/her family? To the pawn-shop owner who unknowingly accepts stolen goods?

Questions like that are why I've never really liked the Punisher over in Marvel.
Mar. 7th, 2008 01:18 am (UTC)
*nods* They are the difficult questions, aren't they? The scary thing about people like that Bruce or the Punisher is that they believe they know the answer.
