Cass AU. PG13, but not in a nice way.

Is a child who has never been taught against evil guilty of the evil she has committed? Cassandra doesn't know the words to formulate the question, but knows the question itself too well.

She had ran away from her father to find the answer. When Shiva found and tested her, she had thought the answer was Death. But Shiva's judgment had been ever harsher. Not death, no.

She had bloodied Cassandra and left her like a broken toy at the Bat's doorstep. The Bat had taken her in, giving her help but no kindness.

He still doesn't. His family is warmer; she prefers his coldness. Twice a killer, she doesn't want the love she doesn't deserve.

She doesn't miss the legs Shiva made forever useless, either. Shiva had judged her and found her unworthy. The Bat does, too, but he also finds her useful, and that penance is more than she had hoped for.

So she wheels herself down to the Cave every night, seeing what he sees and whispering on his ear the truths she reads on everybody. She lies. He is armed. Knife on his ankle. Sometimes she can read a whole group at once. One day, she might read the city, become the city and speak for it, and then he will love her a little and hate her more. But that won't matter to either of them. She will be useful.

She is the Bat's eyes that see into people's souls.

She is Cain's murderer.

She is the Oracle.

Now that is creepy.

And by showing what Cass as Oracle is, she also sheds an interesting light on Babs as Oracle. Because Babs is interesting partly because she is willing to be used, but in her own way - and she uses other people as well. That's something that this Oracle isn't capable of.

Tim / Cass in this world would be interesting....

Ohhhhhhh. Yes. Yes, it would.

Woah. This is absolutely facinating. I don't suppose that there's going to be more along this line? *looks all hopeful-like*

... Possibly? I'm way too *handwaves* to write much on a single universe, but I certainly might get back to it. onijade's mention of Tim/Cass in this context is particularly enticing...

Glad you liked it!

Oh, yes. Cassandra could be like a Jack Hawksmoore, only.. not meta. She could be Gotham itself, and that's a scary, wonderful thing. How very Bruce that he would be jealous of his city. This Cassandra has a very Shiva-voice...

Thanks! There should be a fic, somewhere, about a Cass that was never found by Babs, but rather drifted more and more into Gotham's underground, finally *becoming* Gotham.

Oh, *eeeeek*. Cass as Oracle. Oh. Oh.

Cass as Gotham.

(I wonder about Steph and Cass in this world, personally.)

Also, She had bloodied Cassandra and let her like a broken toy at the Bat's doorstep should be left, not let.

Fixed. Thanks for catching it!

(I wonder about Steph and Cass in this world, personally.)

Eeek. Steph would be freaked out, Cass would be less open to friendship (a purer Bat, having made on her own eyes less of an atonement). It'd certainly be a darker relationship. *ponders*

You know how people read things and say "that made me shudder"?

I literally shuddered. I recoiled from the computer, shaking and hugging myself.

I can think of no better way to compliment this story, and you its author, than to tell you that. And now I need to read something with Steph and Cass playing rooftop tag again. Eeep.

I... yay? I'm thoroughly flattered, but just in case I'm sending a basketful of virtual kittens your way. Rooftop tag-playing kittens. With tiny eggplant capes.

You're still stuck on the Cass's brain as a computer thing, aren't you?

You really make me wish I had enough of the necessary canon knowledge to appreciate this fic more fully, to understand more intimately to what this is acting in counterpoint. But I really enjoyed this the way the world stands now, so I suppose I can't complain.

Oh, I'm *really* glad you like it anyway. I worry sometimes that I lean too much on certain particular AUs and rabbit holes for context, making the fics mostly meaningless unless read with very specific expectations. I'm very happy you think this one stands by itself!

Oh, neat. What a different take on Oracle, but perfect. Your brain is so shiny!

Yay! Thanks :). I had just thought about exploring a Cass who couldn't fight anymore... but as soon as I imagined that, I knew what she'd be doing. The chair, in a way, was just a coincidence.

Ooooh, that is tight, yo. Gives me shades of that Buffy scene (in the episode she becomes a telepath?) where she's reading everone's minds and Oz is thinking:

I am my thoughts. If they exist in her, Buffy contains everything that is me and she becomes me. I cease to exist.

Goosebumps, mate. From both.
