Once more unto the breach

The daughter of two assassins of legend. A killer before she had learned to speak, and a hero from five seconds after that until (maybe) last week. Heir to Batgirl's legacy. A soldier for the Bat. An almost-Goddess for killers. A lover of tea. A good listener.

She liked raves.

Her best friend is dead.

She might or might not be the current leader of Ra's League.

Thirty prompts. Thirty fics. Cassandra Cain. If she starts talking like Tim or Bruce, just shoot me.

What can I say? Impulse control is not my thing.

1.Transference 2.Daddy Issues 3.Addiction 4.Ego/Id 5.Multiple Personality

If she starts talking like Tim or Bruce, just shoot me.

I will, but it's easy; she's a teenage zen master. If in doubt, ask yourself, what would the dali lama say? (WWDLS).

I don't know from zen master; she's too ... jagged on the inside, ya know?

Re: Cass
No, I don't know. I never found her the least bit jagged or "broken", I believe the popular term is. That difference people notice between her and the other Robins is that, despite her childhood, she is very much at peace with herself. Even when she was most angry at Cain, during Father's Day, she understood and accepted and redirected the love she felt rather than suppress it in simmering, unhealthy, rage. It's only her speech impairment that confuses the issue, because many of the spiritual things she feels don't have words in English.

I've only collected the first three Batgirl trades, but the issue "Father's Day" really stands out for me as one of the best of the early (pre-speaking) Cassandra stories. Cassie's need for resolution about her relationship with Cain took readers to some pretty brutal places in that issue, and in the end she figured out that Bruce is the closest thing she has to a father. And the knowledge delighted her, which is disturbing in its own way. I mean, it takes a special kind of girl to present Batman with a Father's Day gift (especially when it's not technically Father's Day) after she's just faced down her assain father in a max-security prison. Oh, Cassie. You are the ultimate in woobie.

I know there has been a lot of (excellent) meta about Bruce's lack of attention toward's Cassie education/social life/general well-being and the way Cassie is treated so very differently than the Robins. The gender dynamic is in play in that situation, but I'd like to see how/why it's justified as a part of Cassie's place within the Bat family. Does Bruce treat her differently because she is different from the boys in more subtle ways? (And this may be an extremely out-of-date question to ask, since I haven't read any Batgirl apart from War Games in a looooong time). Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I know you'll do amazing things with these prompts and I eagerly await the first post.

Hmm, those are interesting questions. I'll have to read/reread the earliest issues - there is much I missed or read on a roundabout way. I have theories about the interaction about Bruce and Cass, but I need to go back to the beginning and take a good look before I write anything. (This fannishness thing looks remarkably like work, some days... *g*)

She liked raves.

I forgive Gabrych for all he did for that scene alone. Cass loves raves!

Which issue is that scene in? Because I need to see this.
(And which issue was Father's Day, again?)

I think it's about Batgirl 61, sixty-something, if I recall correctly... (I'm very vague about portions of my Batgirl canon, something I should have remebered before diving into this :D) (OTOH, it's a nice excuse to reread some very cool comics...)

Word. One of the few coherent extrapolations of Cass' uniqueness.

*gloats like a ninja*

... *a ninja that needs a Cass icon*

Ninjas gloat in a very cool way, I'm sure (although nobody in the West knows for sure, except Batman, who learned how to gloat silently Red Dragon Style when he was fourteen).

Though Alfred banned it from the manor, for being conduct unbecoming of a Wayne (more importantly, for being conduct dangerous to the china).

Honestly, your Cass/Tim essay is some of the best Cass meta I've ever read.

*blushes* Thanks!

I mean, yeee-ES!

I mean, don't get me wrong: on the one hand, the above post makes me ecstatic. on the other, i'm worried as to whether your okay fine my sanity can survive doing it again.

Thus, I am cautiously optimistic.

Those are pretty much my feelings, too... *g*

Wooo! Cassie! Awesome. I really don't know how you do it, I bow to your mad psycho-story writing skillz. Wee! Cassie :) I'll prepared for more metaphorical kicks in the stomach that make me say 'aww!'. To quote Mongul (?) I'm a glutton for punishment... at least this kind of punishment. Because it's delighful. I should stop babbling now...

Also, the table has gone mad. It decided to get stuck on 20...

This is the awesomest news I've heard all day. You know whose hands those are in my icon, for the duration of this comment at least.

hradzka has some gorgeous meta (3 posts worth, IIRC) on how and why Cass should speak. It's in his Memories. (I have the links at home, but I'm not currently home.)
Jun. 1st, 2006 11:53 pm (UTC)
*reads everything* Wow, thank you. That's really great meta!

Hi, I came by through a rec for your Lex Luthor philosophy. I know next to nothing on DC comics but I think I fell in love with Cass or at least the early comic Cass from what I gathered with google.

*g* Thanks for letting me know! I'm always happy to know a fellow Cass fan :).
