Nightwing put a hand over Tim's shoulder. "What did you find?"

The lightness in his tone -for somebody trained to hear, like they were- was forced. Nightwing was ready and willing to do whatever was necessary - and perhaps more. He quipped to fearsome criminals and crazy half-gods, but having his loved ones threatened drove to the fore the aspects of Dick that were closer to Bruce's.

Having Bruce bedridden, paralyzed by an unknown venom, did the trick very well, reflected Tim. The fact that the dead bodies of Two Faces and the Joker had been found hanging from lampposts surely wasn't helping.

"I think I know who did it. Or rather, who couldn't have done it." Tim pointed to the list he was compiling in the Bat-computer. "I've accounted with reasonable certainty for the whereabouts of every living villain or hero with the knowledge and abilities to break into the Manor and poison Bruce. None of them could have done it."

Dick looked intently at him while clasping his hands behind his back. It was an oddly professorial attitude, and Tim felt a soft chill in his back. Bruce wasn't dead. Dick shouldn't be already taking the mantle, assuming the darkness. But then, it wasn't as if he could ever be convinced otherwise. With Bruce unable to take the role, Dick would step ahead and get the job done as close to how Bruce would have done it as possible. It was as simple and as blind as that. As love.

"Then who did it, Robin?"

Tim looked back at the huge monitor. "The only possibility that Bruce didn't, could never consider. The only person that could have bypassed Bruce's defenses. I think Jason Todd is alive."

Dick put a hand gently over Tim's neck.

"No." Tim felt an small pricking in his neck. "I'm sorry, little brother. You are too much like him to understand why I have to do this."

Tim tried to blink in confusion, but his lids were too heavy, and he

I... actually didn't come up with that part yet (I lie: Bruce was almost killed again, Dick realized that he cares more about Bruce being alive than about Bruce loving him -alright, so it's an AU- so he decides that *this* time, he won't let his family fall. This time he'll stop the bad guys before. But this was a Tim fic, and Tim has a blind spot or two about Dick *g*).

Oh DEAR. Wow. That's quite the dark AU.

Also, I think you made an error with the italics coding?

Whoa. I admit, I thought it, I thought it for a split second and then I thought, couldn't be. Really nice set up and mood and then WHAMMO. I'm with B. Why why WHY? *gimme hands for more*

I thought it for a split second and then I thought, couldn't be.

WINS. Or... um, something. I admit it, it's rather a left-fielder in terms of canon. My vaguely sketched idea for this (cf my answer to blythely's comment above) is that Dick has a bit of a moment where he realizes that

a. He cares more about Bruce being alive than about Bruce liking him. (I think that is something that can be framed as a Bat-deformation of normal father/son relationships... it comes a point where you start seeing them as mortal people you love, rather than all-powerful judges).

b. The not killing thing? It was all about Bruce's approval. (cf Zucco)

But this was just a handwavy reality "check" ("it's crazy, but is it *too* crazy?... weeelllll") rather than a full blown plot. I just wanted to blindside Tim, and play it off against Bruce's huge Jason-shaped blind spot.

I think this attitude explains Tim's sixteenth birthday from Batman. Oh god, I think I just agreed with Batman that mindfucking Tim was a good and necessary plan. Marcelo, what are you doing to my brain?!

*evil laugh* When you start agreeing with Bruce's pedagogical methods, that's when you know you are in trouble.

Seriously, you break me.

I think Dick does it out of love (like he does everything, really). For very scarily Bruce meanings of "love".

I think most people underestimate Dick's capacity for guile and ruthlessness because he gets compared to Batman, and it's easier to just assume that Dick is the good one.

Dick is good, very, very good... and also very human. He can be anything he wants, and one day it might not be something everybody else expected him to be.
