Title: On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth
Author: __marcelo
Fandom: DC Comics/V for Vendetta
Rating: PG13.
Pairings: None.
Notes: For ithurtsmybrain: 147. Cassandra Cain (Batgirl)/V (V for Vendetta). Cassandra/V. V/Cassandra. You understand, I just *had* to write something.

It took an special sort of man to realize that even the most despicable tyranny that had ever oppressed fair England could -would, once it felt threatened- raise heroes.

They'd be harsh, dark heroes, with little concern for the innocent and trained brutality under their skin. But then, he was a harsh, dark villain himself. They would fit, and, by the rules of narrative and Drama, they would thwart him. (Finch the Hound didn't count; he was a man of England's past, perhaps of her future, but, to his credit, too out of sync with the times. They would no more trust him that they'd trust V, for tyrants have a nose for honesty.)

So V decided to do the logical thing. He'd attack the facility where the regime's secret killers were trained and housed, the few competent ones they allowed themselves in their mutual fear, and he would kill them all before he started his final Act.

That he did. Hence the fire and brimstone (not a figure of speech, but a touch of stagecraft) rising to the clouded night sky from the ruins of the old country house.

Hence the many dead guards, and the seven dead killers. All very young and very deadly, but, in the end, just human. They thought killing was something you did with your hands or with a weapon.

Killing, like everything else, began in the mind. V had thought about how to kill them before drawing his first knife.

There was a last killer, though. The youngest, deadliest one. Somebody who knew about the roots of death.

She stood apart from V, and, very deliberately, lowered her sword. "I won't fight you," said her body.

"Fair maiden," said V. "Fight or not, you shall die tonight. It is too early for the curtain of my little drama to be raised in front of the unappreciative eyes of the Finger."

"I won't fight *you*," said her body.

"You believe you know me?"

"Yes."

"You don't. I am a lost verse, a faceless mask, a memory forgotten, a rumor unsaid. Who I was, I forgot. Who I am not, was taken from me. Everything I am is new, for I made it myself. I do not know you."

"I won't fight you," she repeated.

He threw a knife at her throat, too fast to be caught or avoided even by a trained killer.

She could have.

She didn't.

"... It is decreed that, in the interest of State Security, all assassins currently working in a per-assignment basis for the Government shall be captured and dispatched to re-education or research facilities. Their properties and equipment shall be confiscated, and their children, should they be deemed of possible use, relocated under the care and training of the Special Security Detachment."

Oh, there's so much in this little ficlet. When I am no longer tipsy from a Seder, I will lose myself in trying to unpack them. Mmmm.

Hmmmmm, interesting way to read it (by 'interesting' I mean not what I was thinking about when I wrote it, but your idea would have probably made a better story *g*). Glad you liked it anyway :p

*blinks*

*rereads*

*twice*

"I won't fight *you*," said her body.

Ahh. That's, uh, suggestive. He's a kinesic-adept too then.

*reads again*

I'm somewhat hampered by not having read the graphic novel in years and not having seen the movie. That last announcement sounds like it's trying to tell me something I'm ill-equipped to grasp. As does the entire fic actually :)

not what I was thinking about when I wrote it

Tells me then; I's all curiousey now.

I obviously didn't made it clear enough, but my idea was that V used to be Cain (although the experiments erased his memory, as told in the movie), and Cass -who was taken by the state and trained as an assassin- recognized him, which is why she doesn't kill him.
