Title: A matter of timing.
Fandom: DC, specifically CSA!Earth.
Warnings: PG13, based on a comment from razorsmile (if that isn't a warning category, it *should* be).
Summary: They are never easy, are they? Things between fathers and daughters.

The waiting room was huge and filled with people from all walks of life. The doctor was perhaps the best in the world, yet he refused treatment to nobody. As friendly as he was knowledgeable, only sickness, it seemed, was his enemy, and it was rumored that he had enough credit in the favor bank to make his clinic as close to safe as it was possible in the world.

"You can come in now," said his assistant, and the young woman who had been waiting for hours entered his office.

"You," said Dr. Cain.

"Hello, father" said the young woman. "I see you have been doing well. Had any new catastrophic failures lately?"

"Every person that dies is a failure."

"But none as big as I was. That's what you still think?"

The man lowered his head. "I've never blamed you for what you... for what you did. I wanted a successor, and I pushed you too hard. It was my fault."

The woman walked to him and raised his chin with her hand. "Do not blame yourself for what I am, father. For what I do. I am nothing but grateful for your teachings."

"I taught you to save lives, to be the best doctor in the world, and you use that knowledge to kill."

She smiled. "But I am the best assassin in the world. Being the best isn't more important than what you are the best at?"

He turned away from her. "What do you want? Have you come to kill me?"

"No," she said. "Your breakfast this morning was poisoned. I came to say goodbye."

The man felt a sudden weakness and fell to the ground. A short and painless minute later, he was dead. She closed his eyes and left his office.

Ack! dangerous! This Cas is great! What would Shiva be in this 'verse? maybe still with Cain?

I don't know why, but I pretty much blame your takes on him, but Cain always makes me go 'awww'. I'm sure that's not the intended reaction.

Good question. A traditional chinese healer, maybe?

And now I have the sudden certainity that Cass killed her.

It is utterly bizarre to see a Cass who is this comfortable with the spoken word. And amusing as hell to think that she would become a healer to spite Cain had he wanted her to be a healer. Oh, Cain, children are never what you expect.

Oh, Cain, children are never what you expect. So true. Heh.

I made Cass so articulated mostly to make her more of an opposite image to her Earth 1 self, and partly because I don't think a Cain who saves people would have done to Cass the kind of (useful) damage the other Cain did.

But, yes, I had to make myself write her lines. She wanted to just enter after he died, say goodbye with a gesture and go.

.... A killer if Cain wanted her to be a healer. I need to read before I hit the post button.

And yes, absolutely, this Cass would have been raised to speak and speak well -- can't get through med school with useful gestures (though I've seen some residents who looked ready to try communicating solely through rude sign language *g*).

Ouch. I'll be over in the corner wondering how I missed this one.
