always go for the emotionally-stunted male lead
instead of the perfect dude?
Okay. You're Beautiful, my first K-drama in... a while.
Everyone was raving about this a year back,
and I can see why.
In fact, I was compelled enough to do this recap,
which says something, right?
(a) It cracked me up. SO MANY TIMES.
- THE PARODIES. (e.g. Ep 3)
Argh so lol-worthy.
If I knew more about these Kpop singers/dramas/movies
I'd be able to appreciate these much more,
but I managed to get some of them!!
E.g. Sorry Sorry/Temptation of Wife. :D Yay.
- Intelligent self-references (top web searches, hahaha).
- Nudge-wink references to idol life.
E.g. SLASH FANFICTION hahaha THIS WAS SO SPOT-ON, I CAN’T EVEN.
I would have been even more pleased
if they had included a joke wrt girl-in-boyband Mary Sue fic because –
come on –
the entire show is practically a fanfic.
And photoshoots with the most ridiculous themes.
And unfortunate debuts. xD
And more serious issues, e.g. how idols deal with the media circus.
And plastic surgery, and lip-synching.
Not to mention that the fans’ attitude towards A.N.JELL’s relationships
completely mirrors some of what I see on Arashi forums. xD
- President’s An's random Engrish.
- Specific moments:
>>>The phone call between Tae Kyung and Mi Nam,
when she was pretending she was in the hospital
(‘GET YOUR EGGS HERE! EGGS!’ lolol).
>>>The scene in which Tae Kyung finds out she’s a girl
(and there are GLOW-IN-THE-DARK BALLS. xDDD).
>>>The whole autograph-choosing business. :D
>>>When Tae Kyung and Mi Nam get lost after leaving the restaurant
and walk round the same building... 5 times(?).
So typical of males.
>>>He Yi’s ‘quietly’ mistake.
>>>Tae Kyung doing ~emotional~ interpretive dance in the middle of the field.
And The Pig.
>>>The whole pharmacist’s wife situation.
>>>The POGS. THE POGS.
Hahahaha such a stroke of genius.
Tae Kyung’s reaction to the initial discovery was utterly hilarious.
And the pog battle, xD.
(b) It was adorable.
- When Mi Nam decided to do stuff for Tae Kyung’s birthday –
the water bottle being mysteriously-filled etc etc.
- The points scene,
when Tae Kyung FINALLY got 100pts and was completely ecstatic.
Likewise, things like the hairstyle change. xD
(AND JANG GEUN SUK’S GRIN IS ADORABLE, OKAY.)
- 'I like you'.
- The whole night blindness/seeing the stars analogy. <333
(c) It broke my heart at points.
THE SHIN WOO X MI NAM PLAYGROUND SCENE,
when he was talking about their make-believe relationship.
Impressively well-scripted and moving.
(I think this will stick with me for a while.)
(d) Tae Kyung.
Neurotic/oh-so-fussy but ADORABLE,
and you totally get where he’s coming from wrt the mother issues.
- Tae Kyung’s comebacks.
ALWAYS ACERBIC/WITTY. ALWAYS HILARIOUS.
- Tae Kyung’s facial tics.
(You know what - I love Tae Kyung in general.)
- I love the way Tae Kyung is first shown to be softer than he looks –
where he goes ‘So bidets are dangerous.’ xD <3
(e) The house.
And I love that they have photos of themselves pasted all over.
The things I didn't like:
(a) Overused HYD-esque love triangle.
And SHIN WOO IS TOO PERFECT.
In general the Shin Woo X Mi Nam thing is very fan service-y/eyeroll-y.
And some scenes were clearly calculated to wring the tears out of your emotional teenage fan,
e.g. the greenhouse scene.
It got to a point where,
every time the camera panned out from Tae Kyung X Mi Nam moments,
I expected to see Shin Woo gazing down
from The Roof of Angst and Utter Sadness. ><
(b) Jeremy X Mi Nam.
Personally, I feel it would have been sufficient
to leave it as friendship
(though apparently the two actors got along really well on set?).
Insufficient development in the lead-up to the confession -->
(Jeremy's feelings seem to have been forced in just because.)
I do love the concept of the bus
(and Jeremy's confession+song on the bus
was perhaps the most heartbreaking thing in the series
after Shin Woo's playground scene),
but I do wish the relationship outside of that had been more fleshed out.
(c) A lot of the devices designed to showcase the ~depth of feeling~
Mi Nam has for Tae Kyung, e.g. the clip.
And screenwriters need to learn that vast amounts of crying are annoying.
(d) The scheming/drama.
I basically skipped every scene I found annoying,
i.e. everything with He Yi or the annoying reporter
or Tae Kyung's annoying mother in it, esp in the later episodes.
Also didn’t like the conflict near the end,
when Tae Kyung got pissed at Mi Nam over mother darling:
it would have been fixed so easily
with a teeny bit of explanation!
(e) Mi Nam’s general clumsiness/naivete.
IDGI: why heroines in idol dramas have to be so awkward all the time.
And why don’t people think of looking for the Adam’s apple?
This calls for much suspension of disbelief.
I buy the lack of suspicion in gender-bending period dramas,
e.g. Sungkyunkwan Scandal,
but in a modern setting... come on.
That's the first thing you would do
if you saw an ambiguously-androgynous guy.
