Just been thinking about this this morning, and I feel the character and actor got a rough deal at BtVS. It was not their fault, but some bad desitions by management.

A) In casting Marc Blucas as Riley, they seemed to go for a David Boreanaz clone, but a mistake. David Boreanaz had a massive fan base, so big it could support a spin-off series. Marc Blucas should could never live up to that, he was never going to be good enough, or hot enough, for the fans who had already given their heart away, (I had problems deciding on an icon for this post, so went with a young Christian Kane, who also tried for the role, but got Lindsey instead, he might've been a better choice as a departure).

B) Riley was never very well written. In a show reknown for it's dialogue, his lines always felt flat in conparison to everyone else. Being brought in as Buffy's love interest, and, therefore, leading man, they didn't give him the vocal edge on anyone. It made him look dull in comparison to the wit of the other characters.

C) I always roll my eyes at any hint that Riley was the prefect man for Buffy as a human. His male ego was too fragil to cope with a woman as strong as Buffy. He was compeditive, and wanted to be the strong man for his woman, but Buffy was always going to be stronger as the Slayer, this he had problems with. It also hampered him in the chances he had to be Buffy's strong shoulder, which was emotionally. When Buffy needed someone to support her, he was lacking. That was when he could've shown his strength, and didn't.

So I think they made some major flaws in the character of Riley, which is why he is such an unpopular character. Agree, disagree, anything else you want to say?
