So, my attempts at ordering a phone line still aren't going wonderfully well. Much to my amazement a Customer Services person eventually called, and claimed that my block of flats didn't have any cabling to it, and wouldn't until they could dig up Greenwich High Road. Unfortunately the gas people had got there first, so it'd be at least a month until I could expect a working line. I found this highly suspicious as I have a dial-tone, can dial 17070 (engineering test) and 1471 (reads back the last number to call you), which rather suggest to me that there's cabling back to the exchange. The BT OpenReach installation guys had actually chatted to me about building number 5 in the estate which was indeed cableless, but had assured me that my building was fine and I'd had a working line the next day. Nevertheless, BT managed to get rid of me for a month with this excuse.
Some time later BT OpenReach have had some fun causing traffic chaos, so all excuses for failing to deliver my phone line should now have evaporated. Another two failed engineer visits later due to me allegedly not being in (turns out the BT Retail uses that as the catch-all for any reason OpenReach refuse to show up), and still no one at BT Retail can tell me what's going on. To make matters more painful the BT Retail people never seem to put sensible notes on my account, so every time I call I have to go through the same long boring explanation. Interestingly I've spoken to several neighbours who have moved in over the last few months who've had no problems ordering a phone line, despite the claims I was getting that there's no cabling to this block of flats!
The last two calls they've been insistent that even OpenReach think the line's finished, which is a good sign, but the engineers just never show up. I have a nasty feeling that BT Retail and Openreach have managed to completely screw up where I live, with Openreach thinking I'm in building 5 (hence the lack of cables, and failed visits as it's still under construction.) This conclusion is supported by 17070 which reads out a completely different phone number as a circuit ID to the one BT Retail think I have.
Epic fail.
