17th-May-2008 06:38 pm - Another reason I take the road less traveled.
While there are many criticisms of the state, one that cannot be made is that Pennsylvania has an overall lack of natural scenic beauty and vistas. Today, after taking the cat to the kennel to be boarded this coming week, I took one of the many unpaved roads (likely township-owned, but possibly county or state) for my return trip. I was on one that probably sees little traffic that isn't related to the nearby farms when an odd shape at the top of a nearby utility pole caught my eye. I quickly stopped and observed the woodpecker on it for a few minutes. There are several species of them in this part of the state, but this was the only one I'd never seen before: Pileated.
17th-May-2008 03:31 pm - Not something you see every day.
Friday I had to be out and about to get some things done. Two vehicles closing behind me in the passing lane on I-81 caught my eye. Shortly, a pair of Triumph TR8s passed me, the second with a Mass plate "GREAT 8."
17th-May-2008 02:13 pm - lol what...
Had a dream last night that's making me want to write yet another story.

Also, the dream was steampunk. And awesome.

16th-May-2008 11:56 pm - Random useful fact...
Ice cream on a sore throat feels amazing.
16th-May-2008 10:38 pm - *smile*

Nothing like a long playtime with happy ferrets to perk up the mood, then vegging in front of the TV and watching a Good Eats episode. Now I'm vegging in front of Shub-Internet , listening to Jethro Tull for the first time in a long time. Forgot how much I enjoy this song. Going to go hit the hay in a few, with a good book. And SLEEP. Yay sleep. Have a great night everyone, and I'll babble later.

16th-May-2008 09:22 pm - *yawn*
The IHOP commercial with the french toast... is making me want to go there and have some french toast. I don't even like french toast.

Had some dip earlier though... it's very yum... but had surprise!citric acid... all of a sudden my tongue and throat were swollen and hurting and my mouth hurt everywhere... checked the ingredients... O HAY, ONE OF THE TOP ONES. :( Took some of Sarah's benadryl stuff... now I am SO woozy and my throat is still a bit sore. Meh.

BSG is cool though. Yay BSG. <3

ETA: ... Okay Gaeta can sing songs to me anytime he wants o_o STFU Roslin and Lee... I want to hear him!
16th-May-2008 08:34 pm - Ferret ball
The fezzels like their new toys. I got them a pack of jingle balls, and all three are running wild. Yay ferrets.
16th-May-2008 06:36 pm - Home

Came home on time, petted ferrets, ate leftovers. Then I headed back out to get ferret chow. Got the chow, and some toys for the ferrets. Ran by the store to get snacks, then came home. Now I'm going to veg out, watch TV and generally relax. Funny how being home has definitely improved my mood. Yay home. No, I don't know exactly what I'll do to veg, but we'll see.

16th-May-2008 03:15 pm - Meh

Meh, I hate when I start feeling anxious for no disernable reason. :( It's a dull day here at work, ferrets are good, finances are worked out, I'm not feeling 100%, but better than yesterday. So why am I anxious ? *sigh* Wish I knew. More to the point, I wish I knew a good fix for it. *reboots brain*

16th-May-2008 10:25 am - Job Openings!
We need a Sales Rep who's whiz-bang at Business Development.description )

We need a Project Manager for oversight of our software release (patch/enhancement) scheduling.description )

We still need a Java Developer for our web-based apps that work with an SQL db.description )

We are an 8-yr-old software company of about 20 friendly people, at the moment. We're located in Addison, TX. We need experience, tolerance and effectiveness. If you've got that, I need your resume.

(Unfortunately, since I also work here, I don't know the pay-range for any of these positions, but everyone here seems to be happy with their salaries. Although we have some turnover, I haven't seen any due to job-dissatisfaction since I started in Sept.)
16th-May-2008 10:08 am - Friday

Well, back to the shoggoth pit. Feeling betterish, if groggy from meds. Caughts up from my day off (wasn't hard, was working on and off from home yesterday). Slept well, thanks to lots of meds. A few weird dreams as usual, nothing majorly odd. Now to get though today in one piece.

No wild weekend plans as such yet. Alot of playing by ear I think. Tonight I think will be a movie night, or X Files. Not sure. Not going to worry about plans, I'll just show up where I'm told to ;) Not much else going on, finished book 7 of the 'Weird Works of Robert E. Howard'. Mostly Conan stories in this one, which isn't a bad thing. Only 3 books left in the series, which should all be out this year per the publisher. Of course, like most small press publishers, release dates should be taken with a fair amount of salt. Oh well, I'm patient.

Enough jabbering, the shoggoths are calling my name. So off to route some shoggoths.

16th-May-2008 10:27 am - prefold diapers?
I have several dozen birdseye prefold diapers that we're not using anymore. No covers though. Would anyone like them? Please let me know.

The names of three non-U.S. cities are hidden in the sentences below. Can you find them? (The letters are in consecutive order.)

"Steven, I centered the whole trip on your wishes. It is base logic to blame me."
The Second World War saw much destruction.
16th-May-2008 08:17 am - Throat is all scratchy and hurty :(
I feel like craaaap today. Damn sickness stuff. Screw being sick, it's LAME. Not a fan.

Was SUPPOSED to get the car in today but since it wasn't convenient enough for my mom, I'm waiting until Monday. I'll call the place back later to reschedule. My mom is convinced that whatever they need to do to it will cost THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. I really don't think it will, but meh. If it does I'll be pretty annoyed.

Headache. Need sleep. Or tea. Or both... not at the same time, probably...

16th-May-2008 03:12 am - Crazy survivalism not so crazy, film at 11.
The talented and brilliant [info]ziactrice posted recently the question, "What would you change if gasoline was $5-6 a gallon?"

I use 20-25 gallons a month of gasoline, so a $1.50-2.50 increase would mean $30-63 extra. That's quite workable in my budget.

So, the scary thought I had was this-- $6 a gallon gasoline is no longer scary and unrealistic to me. ($10, now, that's the stuff of nightmares.)

I also had the fun thought experiment of figuring out (a)how few hours a week I could keep up my current standard of living on, and (b)whether I could reduce those by one or more days per week if I could save that on the grocery bill by spending those days making my own food instead (which is fun for me anyways).

The sad answers are (a) not more than a couple hours less than I have now;
(b) probably not, even considering that it takes me about 3/4 of a gallon of gas to make a round trip to work, so if I skipped a day of work I could skip $3 or so in costs.

About 25% of my current budget is food costs. I may at some point start spreadsheeting the cost of groceries by food group and figure out if there's somewhere I can switch to a cheaper healthy alternative, but other than that, I think I'm about stuck.

I am also seeking suggestions on a nice descriptive tag for this kind of "I'ma go buy me some property and bake my own bread and raise my own food and threaten to shoot trespassing Southern-hating Yankees for meat* and distill corn for liquor and tractor fuel" maundering, in case the tag below doesn't quite fit.

*I wouldn't really shoot any Yankees. I'd just inform them that the center of the country was not really a sucking black hole, but in fact they had been eating the good food grown and raised there for much of their coastal lives, and watch them fall over in shock**.

**Unlike cow-tipping, this probably does actually work.
15th-May-2008 09:00 pm - Wheeeee.
WHY DOES CRYBABY ANATOMY RUN LATE EVERY SINGLE WEEK? It's 2100, bitch, stfu. >:(

15th-May-2008 09:50 pm - Geppetto: The Later Years

Hoo boy, got a whole bunch of stuff to recommend to you tonight.

First of all, we have a NEW SHIRT up for pre-order: The Kittymonster. Spiritual successor to our popular Bearmonster design and produced because you people would not stop emailing me about Hannelore's kitty t-shirt from a while back. We'll do pre-orders until the end of next Friday and then order the first batch. This is also an EXPERIMENT to see if you guys prefer American Apparel t-shirts to Hanes and Gildan. Vote with your dollars, the American way!

Secondly, I have been listening the HELL out of the new album by Osbourne (no relation to Ozzy). It is self-titled and SO GOOD. Imagine if The Album Leaf were interested in making house music, or if Telefon Tel Aviv cheered up for once. The first two tracks, "16th Stage" and "Downtown" are absolute must-listens, and the rest of the record is really fun too.

Finally, I came across Wasted Talent the other day, which is a really cute little diary-style comic. If you enjoy cute artwork and silly humor and don't mind liberal use of 4chan-isms, you will probably enjoy it!

Okay that is IT. Time to go watch bad movies with friends and play Rock Band. See you Monday.

15th-May-2008 08:58 pm - Holy shit...
D: CSI... I mean I maybe watch this show like once a year, but... omg D:
15th-May-2008 05:46 pm - Excited about stuff...
My mom and I discussed my move and she seems a lot more calm about it now. She still wants me to delay it until family reunion but I don't think that'll happen, lol. But we went out together to U-Haul today so I could buy some boxes... there are a few things I need to repack... a lot of the boxes I have now are tore the hell up.

Things are working out well so far. I have an appointment to take my car to the shop tomorrow morning (EARLY EARLY) and have it looked at.

I need cruise control, my left turn signal fixed, see if there is both an oil leak and coolant leak... and I need coolant... and I think that's it.

My mom got a GPS in her car for Mother's Day and seems to like it. Says I should get one... and I do agree somewhat. Okay I agree a lot, but only because when I am in my car and print out directions to somewhere... it's always nighttime... and my car has no lights. So I have to hold the directions up on my wheel and open my cell phone to use its light to read the instructions, lol. It's just deliciously GHETTO. :P So eventually when I can afford it... I'd like one. Seems to be pretty good, except that in insists there are Arby's restaurants when there's nothing but a dry cleaner's. :P

My throat is annoying me. I need tea. :D

15th-May-2008 02:33 pm - yea, california!
according to hot press releases, the california supreme court just legalized gay marriage and referenced "separate but equal" in their decision. they ruled that the state's domestic partnership law was analogous to the racial segregation of the last century and that it was designed to deny homosexuals the right to marriage, to free association, and <one more right i can't recall off the top of my head>.

so, yea!

/me does a happy dance

two states down, forty-eight to go. :) of course, there are more that have domestic partner laws of some kind, and personally i'm content with that. i really don't care what it's called so long as all the rights/privileges/responsibilities of marriage go along with it. frankly, if the states wanted to get serious about this "separation of church and state" thing and give everyone a government-endorsed domestic partnership agreement and leave "marriage" alone as a religious institution to be managed by the denominations and churches, i'd be happy with that.

how about it, straight people? would your marriage be any different if the state called it your "domestic partnership" and your church/mosque/conclave/synagogue/coven/other spiritual affiliation group (if applicable) called it your "marriage"?
15th-May-2008 12:34 pm - Allergies suck

Allergies are in overdrive today, woke up with a pounding sinus headache, sneezing and a general feeling of crap. So I called in, and went back to sleep. 3 hours later I dragged out myself out of bed, feeling slighty better and less achey. Not doing much, doing laundry and watching tv. Hopefully things will clear up by this weekend. I'd like to see people. We'll see.
