I don't often write about computer games, although I love 'em, so you know that if I say a game is good, I mean it's double-double good with sprinkles. In fact, Psychonauts is so good that I wrote a fan letter to the people involved. Apparently, the game didn't do too well and I would imagine that was because it has a slightly offputting visual style (initially) and a lead character who looks like a fetus in a WW2 airman's uniform. The durr brigade, by which I mean those who won't play a game unless it's set in some dreary Blade Runner-type setting, probably never gave it a second glance, and it's the durr brigade who shape the market at the moment. But if you love games, if you're interested in where they're going and what they might be capable of doing, then Psychonauts is for you. Be warned, however; there's nothing in the first few levels that suggests great innovation. Initially, it looks like every other game out there. Before long, though, you will be picking up your contoller at every possible opportunity, given the awesome level design, the smart-as-a-whip script (I actually laughed out loud a few times) and the central mechanic, which involves you entering different characters' minds and sorting out their psychological problems. It's a great game. Do yourself a favour and pick it up.
