Excuse my language, but holy fucking shit.
You are not going to believe this. You are just not going to believe this.

Wow. Quite a tale! I certainly hope that I am never KIDNAPPED AND FORCED TO BUILD A FUCKING EMBASSY IN BAGHDAD.

(And yes, I know--the tie. But please, try and concentrate on the testimony. It really is astonishing.)

Hi, sir. I'm a long-time fan of yours, ever since I saw Big Train. You have created my three all-time favourite television shows (Black Books, Father Ted and the IT Crowd) and I salute you. Now I'll stop kissing your ass and get on with my post.

I live in the US. California, to be exact. I'm Scottish and I moved here because I wanted to get into a great school, and I thought it can't be that bad. Well, guess what. It is. As soon as I graduate, I'm gone.

Half of the Californians I have talked to actually believe that Bush is doing a great job. With a disapproval rate that almost rivals Nixon's just before his resignation, that seems unlikely.
The other half, fortunately, have a brain. However, only a minute percentage of them can think for themselves in terms of how to oppose him. Unfortunately, dumbing us down with this new Lil' Bush show isn't the right way to do it. But that could all be irrelevant; I heard somewhere that impeachment for Dick and Bush is just around the corner. I don't know where I heard it, though. Sorry.

As for the testimony, that's just incredible. I... I'm lost for words. The sad fact is, the same thing happens here in California. Trucks go down, pick up a bunch of Mexicans and smuggle them across the border. The ones lucky enough not to die of dehydration and suffocation in the trucks get to spend 5 years as slaves in sweat shops, working for less than $1 an hour.

Just when you think you live in civilized times...

Yes, yes; all very shocking. Kidnaps and bad safety standards and all that, but surely the real story here is the Chairman's drink problem: "Thank you both for your testimony." Oh dear.

It's sickening to think this is happening - even more sickening to think the US government is a part of it.

How is this allowed to happen?

What I find most ridiculous about this is that I had to find it on youtube, via the blog of a creator of British television shows. Why the hell was this not on the news? CNN? Any of the news sites I read daily? My local paper?

It blows my mind.

ps. You rock. Keep up the good work with the blog, too :)

And now onto the other problem in Baghdad...

The end of this piece is very poignant.

A nonprofit called Free the Slaves (http://freetheslaves.net) began investigating the problem of contractor sponsored slavery in Iraq over a year ago, but the US government has been very slow to act here.

Please encourage your readers to participate in the WarSlavery.org (http://warslavery.org) campaign to help raise the profile of this struggle to rid the rebuilding effort of slavery. The WarSlavery site also has tons of additional articles and resources on its blog (http://warslavery.org/blog/tag/resources).

(Disclosure: I used to work at Free the Slaves and I'm still a passionate supporter of their cause.)

Grim,

It's me again-Henty Maguire. I know you're a big Telly fan and you must have cable so you should watch c-Span on American TV-or even on Canadian Tv.
Now, I know watching C-Span on Canadian Television is the epitomy of loserdom but....well no..I suppose you shouldn't.
It's great, though.

So there's 25 trillion people in the world; most of them are either too young or too old to even start building an embassy; a large proportion of teh rest probably have no embassy-building skills in the first place;
...and they only need to kidnap Philipinos......
Odds against you getting kidnappped to buiid an Embassy in Baghdad--- I',ll give you 33-1 against.
Cash only.
