I'm thinking of switching to Wordpress. Should I? Any suggestions to help ease the transition?

Not being wise in such things, hopefully us LJers who follow your wit and wisdom will be able to tag along should you leave for Wordpressier climes?

It does give you control over your own data, presentation, functionality, etc; although the level to which that extends depends on whether you mean WordPress.com or a hosted WordPress installation. I'd suggest trying WordPress.com first to see how you get on, and moving to a hosted install later if you're comfortable with it. If you need any help gimme a shout via my blog, I do WP installs and integrations on a business level so I'm very familiar with it. I haven't imported from LJ, but it should be possible.

Is there a way to integrate postings from Wordpress to Livejournal (maybe an lj rss feed?), I read your stuff via my friends page and having all the blogs I read kept together on one page is just better I find.

theres an lj crossposter plugin for wordpress that i use. basically you set it up, then when you post to your "normal" blog, it uploads it to LJ as well.

my only issue with wordpress is that its a bastard to skin properly. but if youre happy with one of the existing themes, or just modifying the colours of one, then it will be fine...

Yeah, it's quite hard to modify the way Wordpress looks unless you are a deep CSS nerd. TypePad is a little easier.

Wordpress is a brilliant blogger to use, there are thousands of pluggins and things you can do with it. It's a little tricky to get used to at first but once you get how it works your fine.

The LJ cross poster posted is a very good pluggin to use, as are the anti spam pluggins. Wordpress can attract quite a bit of spam so Askimet is a pluggin well worth activating.

I run a WordPress.com free account and I really like it. The only slight irritation is that the 'skin' you choose for your blog can have a huge effect on functionality - for instance, the one I have at present looks really nice and simple (I'm not into the lurid, graphic-heavy ones), but for no apparent reason it DOESN'T display a post's categories below the entry, when nearly all the others do. Little things like that. Just be sure to experiment with all the available skins and choose which one works best for you.

If you need any help with the CSS stuff, I'm happy to offer any advice I can - I used it to change mine from excitable greens and yellows to nice, eye-friendly greys, whites and reds. (greykid.wordpress.com)

oh, by the way, thought you might be interested in this link, given your unfaltering love of web comics... ;) It seems DC, of all people, are now actively encouraging their proliferation - aaaaaaargh!

I would be so chuffed if you did move to Wordpress, I might be stupid but I really struggle to navigate livejournal sometimes.
I use wordpress.com for my blog and it's very easy to get on with.

Graham - If you decide on wordpress ...I'll do it for free, sort of. I've built a stack of wordpress blogs and have also worked on Typepad and Movable Type blog publishing systems. Wordpress is yer only man, without a doubt. More versatile, free, opensource (at least the non-wordpress.com) etc. but essentially its easier and cheaper to have a great Wordpress site than with the other popular blog publishing systems

Here's how you might go about it:
1. Choose a few templates you like from the thousands of mostly free templates (google 'wordpress templates').
2. Choose the functionality you want (most commented posts, most read posts, tag cloud, links, post categories, archives etc.)
3. Buy a domain name (new or for sale)
4. Buy a hosting plan from dreamhost or godaddy.
5. Export posts and comments from LV to WP (wordpress makes this easy for you)
6. Put a 301 redirect from your LV site to your new WP site sends all visitors from your LV site to your new site.
7. Announce your new site.

If you want I'll build you a WP site for free to show you what can be done. Then if you want I will do the steps outlined above for a briefcase of cash that we can discuss.

About me: google 'online traction'

Greetings from Colombia - Johnny
