Her name is in the opening credits: Wafa Sultan.

That was quite stunning. I'm actually more impressed with her oratory skills than anything else.

It would be nice to think that this might make some people in the Arab world think about their stance but I can't help but think they will concur with the shouty/handwavy man who cannot argue with people who don't believe in the supernatural (more likely he can't actually form a coherent argument).

I also suspect she's appearing by satellite link from the US and so will thankfully not have to risk her neck for saying what she did.

Arse-kicking stuff nonetheless.

Right on sister. On a sliiightly related point.. Graham, could you recommend any good unprejudiced books on the history of christianity? i feel i should learn a bit more about the facts of a religion i have discarded.

Ta.

Ah, no, I'm afraid not. I do have my eye on the Dawkins book, though...

From a discussion in an athiest group on Facebook came "Religion Explained: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought" by a bloke called Pascal Boyer, who seems to have written a number of very interesting books around this subject:

Not purely Christian, but it's all the same old creation myths and social rules in the end.

This woman is a wonderful orator.

She's bang bloody on too. I know many muslims who reject the more achaic and nonsensical beliefs written in what in essence is an ossified relic of a religious tract, just as I know many Christians who reject the archaic nonsense that's written in the Bible - another relic from a long gone era. Unfortunately for all of us, kneejerk fundamentalism seems to be a relatively masculine pursuit often accompanied by lust for power. And you just can't argue with a fundamentalist, given that unfortunately they are clearly monumentally stupid.

Wow!

That's pretty impressive - what she said, how she said it and the bravery it took.

Thanks for posting it!

Well, I'd vote for her to be elected President of the Earth. Amazing.

What a woman!

On the book front, I'd skip Dawkins and go with God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens. Why get a German shepherd when you can get a great white shark with a gun?

Because "The God Delusion" is a scientific dissection of the supernatural and "god is Not Great" is more a social dissection of religion.

They both have equal weight, however, I recommend them both wholeheartedly.
