Tuileries
A little treat for you. A short film by the Coens.

Looking forward to this too. A return to form?

Damn Graham!

You are the mid-80s 48A of bloggers - nothing for ages then, eh, several.

Thanks, they were hilarious, although I was half hoping that the Nelly song would end with the producer saying 'Noooooooooo!'.

I turned up the volume and everything.

Funnier than 'again?'. I don't think so. Did you want to hear that song again after listening to it at full volume?

Easy, man. I said 'half hoping', didn't I? "Again' was funny. Really it was. Jesus.

Am I the only person who loved The Ladykillers? I'd put O Brother Where Art Thou in my top 20, too.

....I'll be over here.

I was put off 'The Ladykillers' by Tom Hanks saying "Yeah, I love Ealing films, and the Carry On Movies..." as if the two were comparable in quality! (Ah, Morrissey...so much to answer for, ironically.) It's like Hugh Grant saying "Yeah, I love American comedy...Billy Wilder...The Police Academy series..."

As for 'Oh, Brother", I loved the opening twenty minutes and then my mind started wandering, hoping for some kind of story to kick in. 'Fargo' is the last thing of theirs I've loved (I think I've watched it more than sixteen times) and even then they triked us into not caring about the lack of structure by pretending it was a true story (what an absurdly brilliant piece of marketing that was, intentional or not).

They are trying my patience to some degree with these shaggy dog stories, I have to say, but for 'Raising Arizona', 'Miller's Crossing' and for that 'Oh, good, I'm watching a Coen Brothers movie" feeling you get even when they're at their worst, for all that, I will wait for them like a faithful hound.

I hadn't heard that Tom Hanks quote, and it's pretty cringe-worthy, although the Coens themselves do a good mix high- and low-brow (having said that, I'm really not a Carry-On or Police Academy fan...). I do enjoy his performance in TL, his little huffy laughs, but what really keeps me coming back is my overwhelming love of a) JK Simmons, b) (good) gospel music, and c) the phrases "hippity-hop" and "Mountain Girl." I would do anything for JK Simmons--I would even do that. ("that" being watch Spiderman 3)

then my mind started wandering, hoping for some kind of story to kick in
For my part, the lack of story was compensated for by pretty much everything else in the movie, like the music, George Clooney on speed, the music, Holly Hunter, the music, John Goodman, the words "bona fide", the music, &c.

Oh, good, I'm watching a Coen Brothers movie
And what a great feeling it is! Their contribution to Paris je t'amie was a highlight.

Please tell me you've seen and loved The Big Lebowski. It's their masterpiece.

Ooh, this could turn into one of those "it's great/it sucks" threads, and neither of us wants that. Suffice to say, I heartily disagree that it is their masterpiece.

Don't you just love those "it's great/it sucks" threads?

Seriously, though, as long as you've seen it I fully respect your incorrect opinion.

I'm always excited by a new coen film. Even when it's a bad film for them, it's usually still far better than the other crap that's coming out at the moment. I always know I'll get flavour and texture from their work.

Javier Bardem is in this new one. This man can act, so I'm expecting big things. And if you haven't seen 'The Sea Inside' yet, you should. Made me cry manfully in the cinema (sniff, surreptious dab at corner of eyes as if affected by hayfever, swallow, then breathe deeply and try to look unaffected).

Been to Centre Parcs Longleat this year. They have a lifesize cutout of of a waiter by one of the restaurants. He's the spit of Steve Buscemi. I've taught my two-year old to say 'Hiya Steve' when we pass it.
