Why did we all hate school?
Ken Robinson's stunning talk on creativity and education. I wonder how many people will read as far as this sentence, let alone click on the link.

It's great, though. Unplug the phone and soak it up.

Side note: I'm hugely proud that they named a gathering of intellectuals after 'Father Ted'. Why didn't anyone tell me?

I especially liked what he said about the availability of an ADHD diagnosis. This is so epidemic in the u.s. even many of my adult friends are on ADHD drugs now. We are an unschooling family, because I do not believe education and certainly not freedom of creativity can happen within schooling. I am not sure that the schooling system can really ever be made to work in the way Robinson and others want it to, for those of us in this movement, we abandon it altogether.

I am ashamed to say I'd never heard of this man: now I'm his biggest fan. If he gets tired of academia, he has a career in stand-up waiting...

I hope he doesn't, though. We need people like him speaking up, and speaking up frequently (and very loudly)

I've just posted the YouTube version into my LJ so that my flist can see it too. It's one of those things you feel you must pass on...

Wow, top stuff Sir Ken, whoever you are. I wouldn't begrudge him a knighthood for services to making gnarly old subjects like the future of education accessible and funny. Great speech, totally agree with what he said. I wonder if it's too late for me to become a dancer?

That was great. I wish you could have posted that 25 years ago.

Thank you for the link. My life is that little bit richer for it. Made my day.

Now, balance this against the 'Embarrasing Illnesses', and we have the perfect contrast! Art vs Fart.

Oh. He's great isn't he? Reminds me a bit of James Burke.

Thanks for the link - I'm going to pass it on to as many people as I can. I'm studying early childhood education and I have a very creative-focused philosophy but the attitudes of many teachers I've met who've been working for a long time are frustrating. There are a lot of highly creative and passionate kids at school who are seen as having something wrong with them because they don't like maths and they can't sit still and they're passionate about their interests - oh, the horror of kids actually being interested in things. Anyways, the link is great as is the rest of the website.

The rest of the TED site is worth exploring, too

You're not the only one who thought of Father Crilly, Graham, although you have considerably more reason to do so!

There are some other mind-bendingly good talks to watch on the TED site. I'd particularly recommend Jeff Han demonstrating the multitouch system that now looks like it's going to be fitted on Apple's iPhone, Hans Rosling making data presentation interesting, and Peter Donnelly proving that us humble mortals are clueless when it comes to statistics...

cheers
Chris
