I remember reading about Harvey Pekar's 1988 Letterman appearance in American Splendour when I was a teenager and now here it is! I love the Internets.

Harvey comes out of it badly. He's too shy to engage the audience (who must be engaged in a situation like this) and just comes across as a whiny teenager with an unclear agenda. But I like the way he forces Letterman out of character.

Bonus! Harvey's blog!.

I live in Cleveland, and it's funny how a single person can really capture the spirit of a place. Cleveland is Pekar, who is Cleveland. I don't really know of any other cartoonists or artists (other than maybe Robert Crumb) who can capture a place like that.

The movie American Splendour is very good, and I'd recommend it.

Great one! It's good to see these people's self sufficience shattered! I come back to my American Splendor anthology every onece in a while (oddly enough, the film does not quite do the trick with me...)

Big cheers and thanx from Madrid, Graham. There's a bunch of us who can't get enough of your wonderful job and that have managed to see not only Ted, Black Books and the IT Crowd but Coogan's Run, Brass Eye, Big Train... (a tough call being in Spain) Thanks for such amazing times. We can't wait to see the new IT Crowd!

I have to confess that watching that left me sweaty and uncomfortable and inwardly cringing--in a kind of way I haven't felt since I was a teenager. But then, a lot of Pekar moments sort of do that to me, and I keep coming back for more.

big fan of AS and Harvey's wise malignancy, but he's not the most profligate blogger, he hasn't updated since 2003. Might be a movie tie-in?

If you want to see an even more cringe worthy Letterman appearance then I highly recommend this one:

Oh, it's harsh.

apologies for breaking the comments up with this piffle, as a big fan of all you’ve done i have to ask – nearly ten years ago i remember regularly reading a film magazine called neon – i think you used to write the column on the ‘back page’, if my memory serves me correctly (which is doubtful).
if so, i recall it with great fondness the piece on ‘hitchcock, the master of suspense’ and something very funny on klaus kinski which is still capable of making me laugh a full ten years later.
if this was not you, i apologise and will never darken your door again. super excited about ‘it crowd 3’ though.

No, that was me. Glad you liked the column--they were always written in a desperate rush so it's nice to hear they still have a following....
