The chilling case of 'Miss D'
Young Irish girl wins the right to do something that she should have been able to do anyway, and Ireland looks slightly less backward for a bit.

Why did she even have to go to court anyway?

She's 17 and subject to a care order under the Health Service Executive, so as best I can tell she's essentially in the care o' social services. When she declared her intention to travel for an abortion, they denied her permission, threatening the involvement of the Gardai in restraining her from travel. Distressing eh? Her only option then was court, where the Judge condemned the HSE's behaviour and granted her permission, thank fuck.

Yup, the baby has a condition called anencephaly, it would only live 3 days or so if born.

aww thats sad but why put the baby through that, i understand the girls actions then i just think its quite stupid really with the whole going to court thing as if she hasnt got enough on her plate.

She shouldn't need to travel

Saying that she can't get something here because it is illegal, but is ok to get it somewhere else is hypocrisy. Although travelling is very cheap nowadays, it discriminates in principle against people who can't travel.

Ireland, backward?

Backward?

Not to worry, with Britain France and America toboganning towards totalitarianism, it won't be long before this kind of state interference makes Ireland look positively avant-garde.
