Philip Pullman gets his shafting
Yikes. I have to say, I really don't like the look of the film of His Dark Materials. First of all... 'The Golden Compass'? What the hell is that? Do they mean 'Northern Lights'? Are they referring to the Alethiometer?

And who's that prissy-looking kid? Surely that's not supposed to be Lyra!!! She's a tomboy, for Christ's sake, a street urchin! She doesn't have the money for that haircut!

God, I wish Hollywood would fuck off.

(Ooh, in the cold light of morning, I wish I hadn't written this post. I wasn't aware that the US title was 'The Golden Compass'. I also forgot that Lyra was cleaned up by Coulter. I may be turning into the Comics Shop Guy from the Simpsons...but I realised later I did have a real problem with this teaser--what on earth possessed them to stitch together a trailer before the special effects where finished? The whole point, surely, is to create a world you can believe in, not destroy it before the film's even started. Very, very bad idea. They should withdraw it QUICKLY.)

The Golden Compass is what the book's called in the US.

Ah, come on, you don't even want to find out what your daemon is? ;-)

'The Golden Compass' was the American title of the novel, I think. Ugh, I can't believe Nicole Kidman is Coulter.

'Stardust' better turn out okay.

I know! I don't know who the hell this is, but it is not Mrs. Coulter.

I think Daniel Craig will do alright, though, he has an air of underlying menace that I think is very apt for Asriel.

It looks like an ad for either her new fragrance or Ferrero Rocher. "Mrs. Coulter, with these dæmons you really are spoiling us." But I don't mind Daniel Craig so much, either.

Lyra looks a bit rougher in the trailer, I suppose.

Well they've managed to turn one of the most intelligently written children's books into a typical Hollywood adventure story. Thrills, spills, and you won't walk away remembering a damn thing about it.

Thanks hollywood.

Thollywood.

i think maybe thats after ms coulter has cut her hair and cleaned her up... maybe.
the worst thing i heard was the possibility of them removing the religion parts so as not to offend anyone.
surely the whole damn book (let alone later books) is very closely tied in with religion and thats the point?

Maybe you're right. I wasn't aware 'The Golden Compass' was the US title either. Hmmm...I hope I'm not turning into The Comics Shop Guy from the Simpsons....

Definitely a knee-jerk reaction here, Graham. Pullman seems happy to be associated with the reinterpretation and indeed seems to be heavily involved. It's a Hollywood movie, certain changes are inevitable. 'The character would never do that! This bit wasn't in the book! No, no, no, no NO! Where is the pivotal scene from Chapter Five?!' The book is still available. Seems you are looking for reasons to be negative. Agreed, the trailer is a bit haphazard but special effects aren't a great mystery these days.

Come on, people! Read the bit in brackets!

And I'm glad I didn't see loads of bluescreen 'making-of' stuff before I first saw 'Star Wars'. Would have ruined it completely.

for The Golden Compass at Yahoo.

I gotta say, it looks beautiful, though the whole "hay sup LOTR" thing in the beginning is kind of stupid.
