Not everything on xkcd is meant to be funny. Like Calvin and Hobbes (not that I'm comparing the two), some panels have a more speculative or reflective sentiment to them and don't intend to create a laugh or even a wry smile. I'm sure many of xkcd's 'unfunny' panels will still elicit a satisfied knowing nod from many of the similarly inclined geeky sorts who read it.

surely some Michael Collins joke could be worked in here, it is always funny in Irish schools when learning of the moon landing that such an Irish hero did not get to walk on the moon
