I mean, come on

This has been bothering me for a while now...isn't this the worst idea for a film ever? Beatrix Potter?  The fluffy bunny woman? I mean, what? Have the British simply given up trying to make films that people would want to see? Don't they know that people go to the cinema to try and not think about things like Beatrix Potter? Don't they know that no man will ever voluntarily go to see this thing? I don't think I could respect any woman who would choose to go and see it either.

Maybe if they made some attempt to cast against type, you might have a film here. If Potter was played by, I dunno...Courtney Love, then maybe you'd have something (well, you wouldn't, but you see what I mean). Here's a simple equation for future reference; Cute + Cute =  No-one's coming.

Or to put it another way; Beatrix Potter + Rene Zellweger  = No-one's coming.

Or to put it another way ; Beatrix Potter + Rene Zellweger  + Ewan McGregor =  No-one 's fucking coming.

I just can't accept a sandblasted texan as Beatrix Potter. Nope. Heh.

It would have made a nice Gondry-Kaufman movie, with Beatrix Potter interviewing rabbits for her quasi-journalistic tales.

"The farmer only went and put me in a blinking pie, Miss Potter".
"And what were... Flopsy and Mopsy... doing at this point?"
"Titting about as always, Miss Potter."

Pretty much the worst idea so far this year...

Too true. I think one of the major problems most people have with it is the fact that Beatrix Potter is quintessentially English. So why the hell have they got an American in to do it? Even the tagline is uninspiring: 'The life of Beatrix Potter is the most enchanting tale of all'.

Oh and the last thing the team behind this one did was Babe, so it's pretty much doomed. When's Spiderman 3 out?

Not actually a fluffy bunny woman

You know the shame of it is that you just have to read her books to see that Beatrix Potter was far from being a fluffy bunny, with cutesy eccentricities.

To whit: Peter Rabbit's Dad was killed and eaten (and this is in an early one) and most impressively: Squirrel Nutkin (and i'm not making this up) has a nervous breakdown, is ostracised by his erstwhile colleagues and is mutilated by an elderly would be asassin. He spends a great deal of the book prancing about in what is an obviously lunatic manic state, and is then basically castrated!

It's astonishing.

The other one well worth looking at from a "Is she really this peculiar?" persoective is the Tale of Two Bad Mice, in which Hunca Munca and her husband go in to a spitting rage when they discover that the food they wanted to steal is made of plaster, and basically rip a dolls' house to pieces in blind rage. It's *weird*.

I'm telling you - get them and start reading them through with your wee'un. I got them all in a set and they're fascinating in their oddness. Childrens books these days are sanitised in comparison.

Not that it makes this film any less appalling mind you. Ah well.

C.

wow. I stand corrected. The Hunca Munca one sounds brilliant.
