Maxïmo Park/Art Brut/Cougar, Glasgow Barrowland, 5th May 2007

Yet another amazing gig of the Geordies' I attended: 5th time seeing them, and this might've been the best time yet. Although, I do miss Paul's tighter trousers and more varied dress sense onstage, but that's completely immaterial. And it wasn't just the music that made the day. The people and the banter once again made it so so memorable, just like September of last year. Seriously, it is so worth getting there 7 hours before doors opening purely for the laughs. Besides, it's the only time pretty much we all get to see one another. Thank God for Maxïmo gigs on Saturdays. ANYWAY, let's cut the crap and on with the (stupidly-detailed xD) review...

Pre-show
I got up at stupid o'clock to get in, spending most of the morning being ridiculously chirpy on the phone to Maysie ("MORNING!!!" "God, you do sound excited" lolz), so I'd be there for 12. Managed to get away with a really cheap train fare :P And when I got in, went to Tickets Scotland then to Avalanche briefly to pick up the Melody Maker compilation I'd seen for Maysie, and have a look to see if I could grab something for Art Brut to sign should I meet them. There wasn't even a copy of their album ffs! BUT I did find a promo copy of it, and bought it anyway. It was something, even though I was scared incase they'd be all "where/how did you get this?!" lol. Sat down outside Buchanan Street subway and quickly scrawled the rest of the letter I'd written to Paul before powerwalking up to the Barrowlands: it was all sunny and I just felt really happy and excited in anticipation of the day ahead. Infact I went the stupid way when I came out of Avalanche behind George Square and almost got lost xD On my way up also these neds tried to muscle in o_O
Ned: Awrite darlin' *touches shoulder and looks me up and down* Wher ye gawin'?
Me: O______________________O *POWERWALKS*
Ack, boys totally repulse me.
Anyway.
I arrived up at the Barrowlands at around 10 past 12, not knowing what to expect/who'd be there before me since all of us were planning on being there at roughly 12, however I got up there and saw only Calum standing outside with some strange looking guy with glasses and I was secretly hoping "...I hope they're not together" haha. And immediately I spotted Archis standing at the side of the pavement talking to some blokes, (having his obligatory cigarette of course), thinking how good timing it really was. Calum informed me that I'd missed Lukas by about 10 minutes, to which I was not all that impressed, then he introduced me to Brian (lol) the bus driver's son. He buggered off and we decided to, in the words of Calum, "storm him". Lol. Calum got him to sign the surprise birthday card he'd bought for Lisa which he was gonna get all of Maxïmo to sign (awwww) and I got out my Coast Is Always Changing vinyl. The other guys buggered off and Calum chatted away quite the thing to Archis who was trying to get his nicotine fix before he went in since he couldn't smoke inside :PP He asked if he was looking forward to the gig which he assured us he most certainly was, and proceeded to tell us just how much he loves Glasgow. :DDD Calum kept him talking for ages anyway about one thing and another, about the new album, other gigs they'd played, and such. I asked him whether the new record had been received well on tour so far, and he said it had for the most part, once or twice it hadn't always gone down as well but that was to be expected. He was telling us that he used to be in a band with Duncan who were "shite", but then Duncan told him about his new project Maxïmo Park and it went from there. Ahahah, and I asked him who sung the original demo of Limassol and I have official confirmation now that it is infact Archis who sings on it! He also told us about how much he prefers the sound of the new record - "it's 12 solid songs, I like the sound of it a lot better" and I agreed with him and told him I enjoy the style of it more. So after he'd chatted to us for a bit and told us that he'd like to move to Glasgow... OH! And that there were Glasgow bands apparently turning up to the aftershow that night:
Calum: By any chance are the Dykeenies going?!
Archis: I really couldn't tell you, but I know that Franz Ferdinand and the 1990s are going...
Me: *tries not to fly into a complete rage at being unable to go, secretly gutted*
Yes, after that he went indoors as he was going to watch the Old Firm match apparently :P

There was then the guy right outside the pub looking for 'coppers'. This guy ended up giving him a can of lager, and he was still looking for coppers and drink. Calum took this oppurtunity to change about Maxïmo lyrics. Most of his hilarious creations I can no longer remember but the ones I can...

"I know you'll be fi-ine, now you've got some wiiiiiiine!" (lol 'begging across fae the shop')

"I'll do graffiti if you give me 20p!"

...that's actually it, I'll edit if they come back to me though.

Soon though, this.. interesting character with a fag hanging out of his mouth comes up to us and starts staring at me, and blowing smoke right in my face :| He started talking and asking us things, and because I had my phone out and was halfway through sending Maysie a text about meeting Archis he started shouting going "DONT YOU DARE TAKE A PHOTO EH ME! DONT EVER!" and I'm like "I'm not, don't worry!!!!" O_O
He asked Calum all the usual crap, who was playing...
Calum: Maxïmo Park
Old man: Are they heavy?
Calum: No, they're kind of... catchy
Old man: Catchy? What the hell dae ye mean by catchy?
Calum: Like.. you can sing along to
Old man: And they're fae Newcastle? *starts talking about Northumbria*
Ahahaha then there came the killer line of

"Where huv ah been? Ah cannae tell ye! Whit've ah seen? Ye widnae want tae know! The one thing ah'm afraid of... is the NEUTRON BOMB!!!" before he walked off. O_O

Lmao. He was actually terrifying.
So, it was at this point after his departure that Calum endured what must've seemed like endless ranting about a certain somebody on my part, which I really must apologise for once more 'cause I didn't think I was gonna be able to shut myself up. Anyway all was good. Lol "geordie rage". And then Calum's ingenius idea to use the bag he had his lunch in as a seat XDD

Soon Lisa and her friends Lou and Leigh (lol I didn't realise there were so many L's) arrived, which was cool
Calum: Did yous enjoy not meeting Lukas and Archis then?
Haha. And it was actually hilarious when Lou was talking about something
Calum: Is that your actual voice?
Lmao :/ She looked so unimpressed. Quite mean actually xD But amusing.

A wee while later the wonderful Shona ([info]_lady_eowyn_) and Lynsey ([info]xfakesoundx) arrived and there was lots of hugging and such. Lynsey proceeded to tell me she'd forgotten my CDs (doesn't matter btw, it's cool!) xD And after lots of talking and reminiscing about Maxïmo Day #1, we spied Duncan who stopped to talk to us! First thing I noticed was his Life Without Buildings t-shirt, to which I yelled in the middle of someone's conversation "I LIKE THE T-SHIRT!" LOL. :D I can't get over how smiley Duncan actually is, he's always got a smile on his face, you just have to love him. And he seemed to find it apt/amusing that I was wearing a green cardigan standing next to Lynsey with her blue jacket on, on the day of the Celtic/Rangers match lolzz.

Lisa and her friends left for a bit at that, we hung about for the banter obvs :P Haha. There appeared some strange characters, the sheer number of folk asking "who's playing the night?" was absolutely ridiculous! We discovered that Celtic had been beaten 2-0... you actually wouldn't have gathered that from the riotous noise coming from the Celtic pub next door hahaha. Loads of folk came out of that pub, absolutely pissed and hung about there for hours fucksake. Someone's black bra made an appearance, we couldn't shift it for the entire day.

The Rab C. Nesbitt lookalike was hilarious :P AND THE WOMAN THAT WALKED PAST CALUM SINGING CHELSEA DAGGER! LMAO.
This guy who looked like he belonged in a band spent the entire fucking day hanging around at the entrance smoking, and just randomly walking around! He'd been there since probably way before my arrival and every 5 minutes I fucking saw him, he absolutely drove me mental as I think everyone guessed. I think it was about this time as well that after muchos bitching Sam, Nat and Anna all turned up..

What else? Me being appalled at this boy who looked no older than about 12 smoking. These two (quite chubby) boys with Celtic tops on walking past, one of them staring at me and Lynsey and going "'THE FUCK YE LOOKIN' IT?!" lmao. This random guy with a black vest and greasy hair waddling past to mine and Sho's amusement. Jesus I can't even remember half of it. "MAXWELL PARK???"

LMAO OH MY GOD. This woman who came out of the pub and we were all sitting lined up against the wall.
"Excuse me, huv yous goat any acid?"
Cue us all practically cracking up and Calum trying to keep a straight face whilst talking to her.
"Aw, I thought yees might huv some, sorry"
Thanks for the reassurance. So we all look like junkies apparently. Great... seriously couldn't stop laughing at some of these folk but.

Anyway, Calum was so kind as to go and get us juice and chocolate from the shop, so we were yabbering away quite the thing when I turned round and we spotted Paul walking past to go into the venue, I went ":O" and gasped a bit TOO loudly lol, and he waved and smiled and was all "Hello!" to us. Lynsey started cracking up and it was then that I spotted the hideous white tracksuit bottoms I'd been saying that I was hoping I wouldn't have the joy of getting to see... lmao. We also saw the infamous Rebecca *ahem* :D So he went in and we were discussing how we wanted them to come back out so we could get decent pictures... Tom followed him in shortly after. We heard them soundchecking briefly, we heard "Girls who Play Guitars" and I could've sworn I heard "500 Miles", but I couldn't be certain and forgot about it. Calum was gutted when he got back but :P

Then, possibly the fucking funniest moment of the entire day, this guy with a blue carrier bag stood right across from us bent double as though he didn't want us to see what he was taking out of the bag. We were all lol'ing at him anyway, just 'cause... and a couple of minutes later all we see is a ton of juice pouring out of it and the man extracting a fucking MELON. A BLOODY MELON.
Calum: That wasn't quite what I was expecting him to bring out of that bag...
Lmao! That was completely random, and absolutely hysterical, we were in stitches for ages at that.

A wee bit later we saw Lukas come out of the venue, whilst there was some drunken carry-on going on outside of the pub, and he also said "hello" to us, and he wandered off somewhere. He had to swerve to avoid the drunks haha, we were all a bit concerned for his welfare, especially when he didn't return. :| LOL.

Lisa and co. came back a wee bit later and were a bit gutted they'd missed them, but yeah. We told them how much of a laugh we'd had while they were away, and they were all very puzzled by the fact we all went into hysterics at the mere mention of "melon". Amusement. However they didn't have to wait too long to get their own share, when this woman came up to us all asking who were waiting for.
"Maxïmo Park."
"Och, ah don't know them. Yees heard eh Van Morrison?"
Lmao. So basically we got the story of how stunning her man was (which he bloody well wasn't btw) and how her son or something said he looks like Roy Cropper from Coronation Street without the glasses (which he did btw). She was also VERY fond of Calum's hair which was rather lolz, and my God Christ knows what she was even talking about, she sat down next to us and started rambling "aye, the wan o' the thingy, wae the thingy, and there wis a lamppost!" LMAO. She kept shouting at him "EDDIE!" lol his name was Eddie Harkins, and 'cause we'd just been talking about Eddie Argos everyone kept mixing up the names which was a lol. Poor Lisa and her sore knee got the full weight of her when she was trying to stand up as well "Och, I need a vodka. Wait, whit am a talkin' aboot, I don't even drink vodka, I drink gin!"

After muchos more laughter these guys came over and started talking to us about a load of utter shite. They seriously wouldn't fuck off! Lynsey said something to them about being Geordie and they came over to where we were sitting instead ¬__¬ And they didn't seem to grasp that Lyns stays in Stirling and were in awe of how she's travelled all the way from Newcastle for the gig. They also decided that Maxïmo Park were shite and that Arctic Monkeys were so much better...
Bloke: See that song on their new album, 505? Fuckin' brilliant...
Me: It's shite.
Bloke: WHAT?
Me: It's fucking shite.
So, all I achieved by saying that was earning myself the nickname "Green Goblin" which everyone found terribly lolz other than me. Maybe I took it to heart too much XD Then they started shaking hands with us...
Me: See if I get called that one more fuckin' time...
I ended up getting called Sandman or something instead *shrugs* So I gave up, and they actually FINALLY fucked off. Was it them that'd brought the bra right over to us as well?

Me: Someone should pick that up and throw it onstage!
Lyns: Oh NO! God knows how many diseases that's carrying!

Haha. Calum and Shona kept getting attacked by flying carrier bags as well "BAG ATTAAACK!" and consequently caused everybody to flinch at the mere glimpse of a carrier bag after that. We also kept having to wipe fag ash off each other XDD Anyway, if I remember anything I've excluded I'll edit with it later, there was so much good banter I'm bound to've left some of the best bits out.

The day'd gone in surprisingly quickly, for 6 hours, though I think that last hour in the queue may've been the longest hour of my life :S Lol. Anyway... couldn't get in the bloody venue quickly enough when the doors opened, they searched my bag and when I started legging it up the stairs after EVERYONE else I'd been with had been allowed up, I got shouted at to get my bloody bag searched. I'D ALREADY HAD IT DONE FFS!!! And when I was running upstairs this big bald black guy walked right into me and nearly sent me flying all the way back downstairs ffs!! Finally made it up there...
It was at this point me and Lynsey were whinging about desperately needing the toilet and how the hell were we gonna hold it in when we got crushed?! XD I also realised that I'd eaten nothing but a Mars bar all day and well, there was fuck all could be done about it now.

Cougar
We'd already had a laugh about Cougar, Paul and his obscure music taste (I'd heard all about Wolf Eyes earlier on off Lyns and Sho, and now that I've visited the MySpace I can officially confirm is fucking WANK) when we saw all the instruments and... oh God, we'd seen them wandering about all day and the guy with that hat XDD The words "This is going to be the longest set of my life" summed it up pretty perfectly. Sorry, but I couldn't stop lol'ing. "We may or may not have a special guest for this next song..." And see when Paul joined them onstage for one song to shake some rattly thing? Christ, I couldn't stop grinning like an idiot. He was SO into it as well, bless his heart. What a fucking dork! XD Ultimately I have really fuck all to say about this band so the sooner I shut up about them the quicker I can get on to talking about the good stuff...

Art Brut
Being quite the fan of Art Brut I was really excited about seeing them live. I'd heard you have to see them live to understand them, to be honest you really do. Eddie Argos is amazing. XD The minute he came onstage he took off his shoes lol. I enjoyed them very muchos, they were a much more appropriate support act than the preceding Cougar. So, they played...
Formed A Band
Bad Weekend (set highlight kthx! we all got told that it's our duty as Glasgow folk to form a band, as look at all the good Scottish bands we have: Belle & Sebastian, Bis, blah blah... :D)
Pump up the Volume
My Little Brother (legendary - MAYSIE WOULDN'T ANSWER HER FUCKING PHONE! >O)
Modern Art (however she did answer during this one! this one was fantastic)
Direct Hit
Moving to LA (I wasn't expecting this one, it was surprisingly good though! and I thought Eddie was actually gonna have his shirt off :|)
Emily Kane (BEST song of the set I tell ye! lol. Good old Eddie and his sound advice. "If you're not with someone, you're not meant to be with them" and all that... lol at how he managed to include Jay-Z though :S)
Nag Nag Nag Nag
Good Weekend except mashed it up with Top of the Pops. COUGAR! TOP OF THE POPS! URUSEI YATSURA! TOP OF THE POPS! THE YUMMY FUR! TOP OF THE POPS! <3333333
After that to be honest I was thinking.... roll on June 16th.
And eh, I could tell you all that in the exact order 'cause I am infact the proud owner of a setlist (H)

Maxïmo Park
I really couldn't wait for Maxïmo, neither could Lyns lol "I'm just getting impatient now". They came on pretty sharpish, like 9.15pm, we'd all been spying on the setlist and had made out Graffiti and Girls Who Play Guitars to be the first two songs. All in all I believe they played 20??? Wow. It was absolutely WONDERFUL though. I can't remember the exact order 'cause I didn't GET a setlist... but I know what they played. So:
Graffiti - was absolutely mental, as can be expected.
Girls Who Play Guitars - it's good hearing this live and actually knowing it now.
The Coast Is Always Changing - stunning :) "it won't be long before you've gone, i can't imagine leaving." so early in the set, it still seemed too apt. i was a bit all D: nooo come back.
Russian Literature - this song is fucking brilliant live, and on record. one of their strongest ever. and, it got dedicated to Lisa for her 17th birthday, which we all AWWWWWED at.
Now I'm All Over The Shop
A Fortnight's Time - haaaa. even though it's not as good on record its still fucking amazing live! it's so fun singing "would you like to go on a date with me" in a ridiculous geordie accent! AND! during this Smiffy pointed at us 3 (me, Shona, Lyns) at the 'paradigm of womankind' bit. no, i wasn't just imagining it...
Our Velocity - i couldn't hear Paul for everyone else singing along to this.
By The Monument - again although i'm not as into the album version as much (which is a shame as I've loved this from the moment I heard it, though it IS growing!) this never fails to touch.
Nosebleed - i tried to call Coleen during this but she didnae pick up >:O excellent.
Parisian Skies - the minute that Paul said "this one's for Becca" i knew it was going to be this. i was actually elated though, i was desperate for them to play this, and it's absolutely wonderful. Paul's voice during this one was completely divine, especially at the "oooooooo" bits. so powerful.
Postcard of a Painting - i'm really glad they played this :D so glad. one of my favourites off a certain trigger and haven't heard it since last september. "picture me with you, but you couldn't do ittt"
Books From Boxes - i can't even explain the sheer rush i felt when i heard this one starting. made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, spine tingling stuff. beautiful. almost wasted by the sweaty drunk guy behind me singing all the words right in my fucking ear! i'd managed to shrug him off by the first chorus though. highlight.
Apply Some Pressure - i phoned maysie during this one. i'd forgotten to call her during our velocity just 'cause of the sheer mentalness of the whole affair. fucking out of this world though. this night really brought a certain trigger back to me, i've hardly listened to it at all of late but hearing it live (yet again) reminded me just how much i love it.
Your Urge - "since it seems to be dedication hour, this one's for a wonderful band called life without buildings". yes, i was the only one who cheered. ironic since i would've known nothing of 'em if it weren't for the park XD but anyway. but when i found out it was your urge? i think it made my life. screamed maybe a bit too much. the song was STUNNING live though. i thought i was going to cry infact, but i didn't. i was incredibly chuffed we got this one though, since they sometimes swap it about for karaoke plays (thank FUCK they didn't!) gets right under your skin, this one.
The Night I Lost My Head - mental, what can i say.
The Unshockable - i absolutely adore this, even more so now.
Going Missing - it was fucking amazing. seriously. at points during the set, although to be honest they're a band you can barely take your eyes off of, i didn't watch them, i just looked at the ceiling or shut my eyes and listened to them: i can't even explain it, they're a band that just touch me so much. re-reading that sounds dodgy but in all seriousness.
---
At this point right before the encore - I'd seen Archis watching me at various points during the show which creeped me out a bit in itself - he chucked a bottle of water whilst looking directly at ME, as though meaning for me to get it, and threw it just far enough for me to catch it! AYEEE. *proud owner of Maxïmo water* And no, I haven't drunk it. Behind me also, I heard some girls saying how good it would be if they played their cover of 500 Miles.
---
Kiss You Better - always over far too quickly, this song.
500 Miles - paul brought out his little red book, so i was expecting once a glimpse. "this is a treat for you, or maybe not..." lol. "do you people believe in sacrilege?" us: "WTF?!?!" Paul: "well this is a song by two scottish twins..." and everyone went apeshit. XD first time they've played it live according to paul. really pleased i got to hear this. it was brilliant!
Limassol - and of course, the inevitable closer. this was bursting with energy, i really like how they've chosen to close shows with this song now. it was mental.

I TELL YOU, WE GOT *LOTS* OF PAWL!STOMACH. FULL FRONTAL THANKS. Also, LMFAO at Paul being a dork and nearly smacking himself in the face with the micstand, and later on Lukas throwing it and it just missing Paul, and him being all "HE JUST TRIED TO KILL ME D:" lmao. Hah.
The whole band were actually so energetic though - Archis came down to the front of the stage beside Lukas and Paul REALLY early on, which is not something you see often. Lol also Paul "last time we were here was a concert of epic proportions.. can you live up to it?" Haaaaa. Lukas was fucking TREMENDOUS, really, as always.
Best gig I've been at in a while though, Maxïmo Park are fucking amazing live. One of those bands you need to see live to appreciate fully. I can't wait to see them yet again. Whenever that'll be. Maybe at T on the Fringe, or after festival season hopefully.

Lol, Craig the jammy git got the Maxïmo setlist (as well as an Art Brut one fucksake). Quite amusing outside but:
Calum: If you were a real man you'd give that to her, it means more to her than it does you
I lol'd.
Before that Calum suggested me, him, Shona + Lyns meet up at some point during the summer, somewhere that isn't outside a venue for seven hours (although we don't need to stop that tradition xDD) which sounded like a bloody good idea to me. Oui?

I absolutely pissed myself laughing reading this. Sounds like a fucking awesome day. There's some creepy people in Glasgow, yet I find it hilarious.

Archis: I really couldn't tell you, but I know that Franz Ferdinand and the 1990s are going...
Me: *tries not to fly into a complete rage at being unable to go, secretly gutted*

YOU'RE KIDDING ME, I WOULD'VE GONE INTO A COMPLETE RAGE.

Ned: Awrite darlin' *touches shoulder and looks me up and down* Wher ye gawin'?

Sounds totally awesome! Art Brut are one of the most fantastic live bands ever. I've seen them three times and it's never enough. Don't you love their energy? Eddie really gives it everything and seems like he's having a blast every time.

Aw Paul. I always love his banter in the live mp3s and such I've heard. They seem so brilliant live. Definitely looking forward to finally seeing them in July. For my 21st birthday no less! Having my first legal drink to the Park!

Also ""Where huv ah been? Ah cannae tell ye! Whit've ah seen? Ye widnae want tae know! The one thing ah'm afraid of... is the NEUTRON BOMB!!!" before he walked off. O_O Lmao. He was actually terrifying." That made me laugh really hard. How scary! But funny!

Lastly, the "terrifying" photo made me laugh. Ahaha...

I completely agree! They are absolutely fantastic live, I can't wait to see them again next month. You're right btw, I can't think of many other bands quite like that.

Haaa that's amazing! I can assure you it will be wonderful. Best birthday ever possibly xP

Lmao! Yeah he was scary, but fucking hilarious.

LMAO at those pictures! He's got some scary expressions going on, that Paul Smith!!!

Sounds like another fantastic gig. Art Brut are love. Paul Smith is love. Maximo are love. It's all about the love. Aaaaand I think my keyboard may have just been hijacked by a hippy!!!

P.S. I'm ignoring your comment about Arctic Monkeys. Although I will be sending my Yorkshire-tastic ninjas after you, arreet? :P
