The heart wants what the heart wants what it can't have..
Won tickets to this through XFM Scotland: I didn't care about the details, I heard the words "Dykeenies" and "Maxïmo Park" and eh, I knew I had to go. If it'd just been Maxïmo I probably wouldn't have bothered, but because it was both my favourite bands... couldn't see myself missing it tbh.
Got into Edinburgh about 7, where I saw Calum standing at the head of the queue patiently waiting for me to turn up and give him one of the two spare tickets I had.
"Who else is coming?"
"...my mum."
XD Yeah, so my mum's met Calum now (she had to come 'cause well, I couldn't shift the other tickets. The fools that declined, seriously), something that Maysie says is something of a good thing in that she realises I don't go to gigs and meet complete weirdos. Quite funny. Anyway... he said that I'd probably meet Paul 'cause him and Lukas were still out, but alas no, they didn't come back in time for me to go and scream at them and whatever. Probably a good thing. For all the worrying I'd done about getting in there was actually no trouble whatsoever: someone apparently said it was actually 16+ not 18+. And nobody batted an eyelid... plus there were folk that looked younger than me there. So Kirsty was right, lol.
Hmm, I like gigging in Edinburgh. I want to go to a T on the Fringe show again this year, I have done the previous two years. Hopefully somebody decent will announce a gig at some point soon. 'Cause so far - Kaisers, Foo Fighters, Razorshite. I think I'll pass mate. Kaisers are performing at Meadowbank exactly a year after Muse did... I was at the Corn Exchange seeing the Park that night. :P AND THE DYKEENIES!
Ramble ramble...
Anyway we got in and secured our places at the barrier, and my mum decided to go to the toilet and get a drink. Haha, The Killers' When You Were Young came on. That was actually uncanny. XD "She doesn't know a thing about Paul Smith, but she sure talks a lot of shite" (I found her on last.fm a couple of days back btw, lmao :/ Worst nightmare, I can't escape her). So, we chatted away and stuff, and about 5/10 minutes later my mum comes back and hands me a drink. Just as I take a drink, she comes out with:
"Guess who I just met on the stairs."
"...who?"
"That guy from the Dykeenies..."
"*PROMPTLY CHOKES ON DRINK* WHAT? WHICH ONE??? IT BETTER NOT'VE BEEN MY MAN!"
"He was wearing a neckscarf..."
"*dies* Did he have brown hair and a wee bit of a fringe?"
"Aye. I was just walking up the stairs and he was coming down, and he just smiled at me and I smiled back, then it clicked who it was..."
I SWEAR TO GOD. That is the second time my mum's done that. Remember in August when she fucking saw Brian and his two brothers outside and DIDN'T bother to tell me till we'd left?? ...I hate my mum.
Haha, I kept seeing them walking about and stuff. And spazzing over it, naturally.
There was this right weirdo of a guy standing next to me, lol. On the other side of me, not Calum obviously XD
So, it got to 8pm...
Alright, I admit it, I really do quite like John now. Shut up ¬_¬ He had a Black Parade jacket on, with trousers to match. Hahah, Alan had a Sex Pistols t-shirt on and Andy had one with Bowie on XD And Brian and Steven do just ooze sex, thank you very much. Brian likes his make up I tell yeh.
Same setlist as Sunday night.
THE PANIC: I swear I love this song more and more every time I hear it; now that I've heard it about 4 times I actually know it a bit better now too which helps. Haha. I love how when it starts it's just Brian, and the whole place is just totally silent other than him yelling: that's something I'll miss when they have an album out and everybody knows it, and they stop doing the support slots. I really will. But for now, I can enjoy it. Rrrr, I love this. Just, every time it gets me, when it thunders along and then, it unexpectedly skids to a halt, with Brian's impassioned, delicate "I would die for you". That completely rips me apart every single time, especially Sunday night as I hadn't heard it for a while and I'd forgotten it. I knew it was coming this time. In short, if I could marry a song, it would be The Panic.
THINGS YOU CANNOT SEE: The only complaint I have about The Panic leading into this is that people that don't know think it's one and the same song. Awell, I know better. Caught Brian's eye again! And grinned like idiots at each other during the "falling together, but failing to realise..." bit. And he raised his eyebrows at me, and I lol'd. No, I am not a fangirl, I swear. Haha. I also love how between songs he feigns politeness by calling us "ladies and gents" all the time :P
WILL IT HAPPEN TONIGHT: I'll always remember this as the one that I recognised when I saw them at the Corn Exchange last year, but now to be honest I find it pale in comparison to some of their other songs. Still catchy as fuck though ;)
PICK YOU UP: I seriously am in love with this song. It's so pretty, there really is a fair bit of simplistic beauty in their music. Awww. Brian, marry me please.
STITCHES: I don't have words for this song man, it just completely gets me every time, especially the "make a wish tonight.." bit. It also never ceases to amaze me how every Dykeenies gig I'm at, the same folk are there, fucking ALWAYS. Fiona woman who I see every time had this dedicated to her. Also, vocals on the chorus. Wow, seriously.
CLEAN UP YOUR EYES: Alright, this one IS growing on me now. The "do-do-do-do-doo"s at the end are amazing. Lovely stuff this is.
WAITING FOR GO: This guy quite near me shouted "AW, THIS IS THEIR BEST YIN!" lol. It is so good though. This song's actually pretty damn short though, I noticed how quickly it was over on Saturday night :( Gutted. Meant they were nearly done.
NEW IDEAS: They'd been so quiet banter-wise all night, (well, there was Brian trying to bodypop, but that's another matter entirely) but I died of lolz at "We've got this coming out as our single on April 9th. I'm not trying to promote the single or anything but apparently if you don't buy it, Steven will personally come and cut all your feet off." Lmao. You have to love the handclappyness in this one though! Ahh, they were amazing. Again. As usual. Can't wait for the 13th. I am still majorly disappointed at never having seen Dark Time live yet! Or Feels Like Sleep for that matter, actually... I can't wait to hear Stationary again either. This band are fuckloads better live than they are on record, that is a fact. Think this is the first time I can actually say I'm actually really excited about Friday 13th, haha.
Leading up to Maxïmo Park, I kept seeing the Dykeenies walking about and stuff :P And when Brian was talking to the Fiona woman at the end of the row, he must've seen me staring at him XD Seriously, I am not obsessed.
I was excited by this point, 'cause I haven't seen Maxïmo since September and eh, well. It didn't quite hit that I was gonna be seeing them. Very exciting.
So Dominik Diamond was on talking shite, and then the lights went down and this projector got lowered down (we obviously couldn't fucking see 'cause we were right at the front) lmao, right on top of Calum's head :D Quite funny. They were showing all this XFM wank, so when it finally got taken away again, the band came onstage. Minus Smiffy, naturally. He took ages to come on lol. The band looked spectacularrrr, Paul was wearing ALL black, but his trousers sadly weren't tight enough. Neither had Brian's been actually! I was so gutted. We had already worked out most of the setlist: since we were really close to the stage and the setlist had been put so we could see pretty much the last letter or so of every song. I can't remember the exact order but I think I've got it near enough.

I was surprised that I didn't get COMPLETELY killed like I usually do, squashed but nothing like last time I saw the Park XD That was incredible though. Graffiti was fantastic: Paul sang the line "I'm right out of vision" right at me :P Loved Girls Who Play Guitars, the lyrics to that are really great. I liked it to begin with when I first heard it in September but having heard it once or twice since then I wasn't as impressed, I thought it was a bit of a shit I Want You To Stay type number, but it's really not. I was surprised we got Now I'm All Over The Shop as opposed to maybe others off A Certain Trigger (we didn't even get Once, A Glimpse dammit!), but Our Velocity. Jesus Christ it was mental. As soon as Lukas started this one it was mayhem XD I was always looking forward to hearing this one live, big style. God, the guitar! Adored how everyone screamed "And then I tell you some more about... ME!" so loud you couldn't even hear Paul. Set highlight, definitely. I can't help but LOL at Books from Boxes, still, because of that AAA video and the fact
And so, the encore -
A FORTNIGHT'S TIME
LIMASSOL
A Fortnight's Time is lovely! Love how we were all doing the actions for "5 x 5 = 25" XD And, Limassol. Blew the place up, pretty much. Absolutely fucking brilliant. I can see why they saved it till the end, it is one of the ones that works so much better live.
What a gig.
Calum went to steal the setlist since he was within reaching distance - he managed to rip it in two. XD
Said goodbyes to Calum and everything, then proceeded to pick up about 10 Dykeenies ♥ Me badges that Brian had thrown into the crowd earlier. Sure, they'd been trampled on and stuff, but yeah, not unwearable. If anybody wants one I'll clean one up for you and send ye it :P
I also finally stole a New Ideas poster! Get in. I was gutted there were none for Our Earthly Pleasures though. Awell.
My mum amused me though, by saying "you're more interested in the bloody Dykeenies than Maxïmo Park! I saw you watching them at the side of the stage when Maxïmo were on!" LOL. She also thinks Paul Smith is gorgeous, and now realises how much passion Paul has for his music, and pretty much why I adore them so. I'm glad she understands now, ffs.
My camera was being a dick, so I didn't get many great ones:

My favourite photo of the night :P

Got better Dykeenies ones than Maxeemo I think.

I lol'd.

TOM!

Another thing I loved about this whole thing: they played together in Edinburgh last year, and God, I just love how both bands are into each other. It's just, heaven for me. Amazing.
I'm now off into town to pick up Our Earthly Pleasures. And maybe some other stuff. Eeee.
::Kat:: xx ♥
